Topic: filament not coming out

I have the JR, and all of a sudden in the middle of a design, filament stopped coming out, cleaned head several times and even unloaded the filament and reloaded it. Still same problem

Re: filament not coming out

I'm having the same problem with my Jr. It prints about half the print perfectly fine and then the filament just stops coming out. The extruder continues to move but the rest of the print fails. I've also cleaned out the extruder. I'm not sure what is happening.

Re: filament not coming out

I've been having similar issues with my Dav 1.0 recently. Random jams and gaps in extrusion.
Tried everything on the printer side but nothing made any difference.
The problem turned out to be moisture in the filament. I put the problematic spools in an airing cupboard overnight to dry them out and they printed fine the next day.
If your filament takes on moisture, it swells causing the filament to extrude poorly and eventually get jammed in the hotend and won't extrude at all until you pull it out then reload it.

Re: filament not coming out

I will try to remove the moisture and do this again but one of the spools that did this came right out of it's vacuum sealed bag and still stopped extruding about half way through. Did it get too moist in just an hour of printing or could there be another problem?

Re: filament not coming out

Probably not but I would go ahead and try drying it anyway just to rule moisture out.
There's always the possibility it took on moisture before it was packed.
Or maybe it's just a bad spool. Do you have the same problem with other spools ?

Re: filament not coming out

one thing with PLA that helps a lot is having the filament get lightly coated with vegetable oil (any cooking oil will work I have used olive oil and grape seed oil as well)

You can print a filament cleaner oiler see http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:772299 as an example, you can also search for one you like better if you want, or design one.

basically the sponge/filter material cleans the filament and since you put a small amount of oil on the filter material it places a small coating of oil on the filament. this keeps it from getting jammed and it does not affect the print at all. (think of it like putting oil in a frying pan to keep your veggies from sticking to the pan when you cook)

When ever I print with PLA I always do this now and I have not had any issue since doing this. where before I would get jam ups on new and even dried filament.
