Topic: PSA for New or current 3D Printer owners in regards to Win 8 and on.

I see many threads popping up about issues with flashing firmware when it comes to Windows 8, 8.1, or 10.

The thing to keep in mind is that all of the software, host, drivers and so on where all developed in the Windows 7 and XP era. None of these have been updated since, much less made to be compatible with newer operating systems.

I know some are on a budget and this may not be possible for some but I think all of you need to have a dedicated PC or laptop running Windows 7. You can get a good laptop on eBay for less than $150 with Win7 already on it. If you already have one, all the better. Use it for all of your printer control and flashing. But please save yourself and your hair and stop trying to get newer operating systems to work such as Win8 and beyond.

I am not trying to say they are bad systems, but I am a firm believer that newer is not always better. The 3D Printer market was barely even though of if it was in developing newer OS's. Case in point is Win 10's 3D Printer support. In all honesty does anyone have a 3d printer is supports fully?

If you want to stay new and current then by all means ignore this thread and may the lord have mercy on your soul.  But if you want to make your life easier in the 3d Printing world then at the very least consider my words.

I agree wholeheartedly!  I spent near 2 weeks trying everything i could find using Win 8.1, 10, and an IMac with OSX - 2 weeks!
The whole works, using the exact same software and upgrade files took less that 5 minutes on a old Toshiba Lap with Win 7!  It actually took about 10 seconds to re-flash the printer.

Food for thought.

^^ this right here!

a friend had a win8 laptop - from what I saw of it - YUCK!
I havent messed with win10 yet, and have no real intention of doing so any time soon. The win7 pro 64bit desktop I use for my printers works great with no real issues. I kept getting the "upgrade to 10" thing - did some searching and found out how to turn it off so I am not being bugged about it anymore. wink
