Topic: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

I am going to fit an E3Dv6 hotend, well why the hell not.... I ordered it today direct from E3D along with a few nozzles of differing sizes (I assume they will work ok). I have also ordered or scavenged all the other bits and bobs I think I will need. The hardware mods seem straightforward enough. Are their any problems I need to watch out for? Are they are software issues? I understand Repetier firmware (I am running .92 on a 1.0a)was programed to work with the Da Vinci hotend. Do I have to do anything to get it to work with the E3D one?

Any tips or heads-ups welcome

I have been thinking about adding a E3D to mine as well. keep me updated.

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

Take a look over on the Voltivo forum, there's a lot of info on this there.
I haven't fitted one myself so can't offer any other help unfortunately.

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

I have one in mine.

other then the changes you made to fit it in you may need to adjust  the home position depending on what carriage mod you chose.

I used the  thermistor 5 table and that works well.

Assuming you are still using the same extruder you shouldn't have to change the calibration for the extruder steps per mm

If you changed the extruder you will need to calibrate the extruder steps per mm.

print your parts before you begin the mod!

I assume you have to reflash with the right settings? I am going to retask the stock cooling fan as a filament cooling fan so I have to reflash anyways (I think)

This. Other than that I haven't needed to do anything special, some people say you need to change your thermistor table but I haven't had any trouble with the stock one at all (using the e3D thermistor and heater).

Ok. I will just retask the stock cooling fan and then try it out.

Mozzieblue. You could follow these if your modding the normal carriage

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

I am going to try the modded normal carriage first myself.  I may go to another carriage but probably not a Bowden set-up.  I recall reading (perhaps on these forums) of some folks who had been using a different carriage that the one listed above.  I don't have time to look atm but will try later if you are interested.

I am running Pico Heads in all 6 of my Da Vinci printers. Look on http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:839971.
There are mods listed for the E3dv6 as well. I have a fan mount design for the front of the carriage as well. I need to get it posted. It helps to create great air flow back to front. Its a push pull system. I can run just about anything. I like to run PET / PETG. No need for glue on the bed. No smell or warping issues. You'll love your printer after getting the stock head out.

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

OK it is done (ish) all working..but... how do I re-flash the firmware with the new settings i.e retasking the cooling fan.

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

Assuming you have already flashed it to reflash it with new settings, just open the config.h  tab and change the definitions
then save the config.h and upload your sketch.

Thinking about doing this tomorrow or Sunday myself.  Assuming you are doing the mod of the current part per the videos, what is your z-offset?   I thought the nozzle location is fairly close to where the stock one is.  How does the thermistor plug fit the PCB board.  Some have commented that it is a lose fit.

Also did you use bullet/butt connectors for the hot end?

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

When I did it with the mods to the stock carriage  there really was no significant change in z offset other then needing to re-level it.

Thanks.  I believe I recall you moved to a different carriage in a Bowden set-up, correct?

How was the mod working for you with the original modded carriage?  Looking to stay in a direct drive set-up for now.

Also curious to know if others are printing using different nozzle sizes with this set-up?  I bought a few other ones other that the .4 to try but had not read anyone messing around with them.

Also any recommended gauge of wire for the 12V for the fan?  Is the stock E3D fan wiring long enough?  Instead of soldering I was going to crimp on as new connector for the 12 v and neutral on their respective "pins" in the plug.  Any issues with this?

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

I am still direct drive not Bowden. I print some times with flexible filament so no bowden. But I am using a different carriage and extruder. the stock one is ok but I kept having it loosen up way more frequently then I liked and its not as stiff so you get less accurate prints. I was not happy with that so switched to a printed carriage. I have lost some z height at them moment but it prints much better. The loss of the z height hasn't been a issue for me since I haven not ever printed that tall. however I'm not entirely happy with the current set up and have been working on making a new one.

Thanks.  You will have to share when you get if to your liking.  smile

Also any thoughts on this? (I edited my post while you where replying)  smile  :

The wires on the e3d are very very long.

I tapped in to the 12 volt connecter on the board. I really didn't want to get in there and solder because it is a tight fit and there is a good chance of messing it up so I just glued the fan cable into the 12 volt connector.

I have also gone to a bowden system and it makes it shit fast! 80mm/s high quality. I am sure I could push it to 100mm/s on simple shapes or more if I am not fussed about the quality.  Although at that speed it sounds like it is about to takeoff/blow-up.

One bit of advice. When you order the e3d (from e3d's website NOT ebay) order some spare bits, thermistor, sleeving and ferrules.

I did plan on that and did order a few extra parts, so I should be set (already have E3D V6 plus extra parts).  I have been looking for a 4 pin extender cable locally but cannot find one so I ordered one.  I may be able to make something with the parts I have around.  Then I can splice into the extension and not monkey with the original power cable or socket.  If I can put something together I will do it tomorrow otherwise it will need to wait until I get my extender.

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

I soldered mine.  I used some 14 gauge speaker wire I had laying around for the  12 volts supply.   18 gauge or 22 gauge would work its not pulling that much. An old Ethernet cable or usb cable would work as well.

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

Hey guys,

I've recently bought and installed an e3dv6 bowden hotend but think, i might have a problem.

When extruder starts heating to load filament smokes started to come from the extruder. I've checked if the hot end is touching any plastic parts, but it wasn't. I was afraid to burn it so I turned the printer off. Do you have any idea what might be wrong? Or is it normal since its the first time the extruder heating?

My printer is 1.0A with repetier .92

Maybe your thermistor thinks that your printer is at a lower temprature then it is. Put your hotend on a much lower temp then try to load filament again. If its working then you have to update your thermistor tabel or change out the thermistor with a default 100k one.

Re: So I am fitting an E3Dv6.......

Thanks for te answer. I fixed my thermistor issue. But now I have another problem.

There is no extrusion of filament during a print. Hotend moves the way it should butnothing comes out. There is no problem while loading the filament but, it dos not extrude during the print.

I'm using PLA, no clicking sounds.

Do I need to change e-steps or something?
