Topic: Odd filament issues.

As you all know by now I swapped out controllers and now run my Da Rampi on a RAMPS 1.4. I thought I had it all dialed in and was going to do a write up on the process and all until I decided to switch filament.

I ran my test using the remains of an XYZ cart containing natural filament and it looked pretty good. It was printed a bit too hot so it did bow in on one corner slightly. I can live with and adjust that.

I am trying to print all the plastic parts for a Delta Printer and I started with Hot Pink from Shaxon. I ran my usual test to check for shrinkage and such by running a 20 mm calibration cube. It came out horrible. Was all deformed and melted looking so I thought I screwed up my settings. Went back and checked but all was still the same as it was with the stock filament. So I decided the filament had to be bad and went to Frys and bought bright yellow. Came home opened it loaded it and tried a test print. Got the same results as the pink as you can see in the attached images. So now being completely puzzled I reloaded the stock and printed another cube back to back with the yellow with exact same settings and as you see in the picture it looks pretty good.

So has Shaxon finally failed me and I got two bad rolls from them or am I missing something due to color or density? I have a roll of bright green as well but now I am afraid to open it as it may do the same as the pink and yellow. All of the Shaxon stuff has always arrived in a box vacuum sealed in a bag with desiccant. I have used them for a while now and have had great results with basic colors and a  previous roll of yellow printed great as well. So I think I have just been burned on two bad rolls.

I have no experience with changing controllers but, I use mostly Shaxon filament and like it.
I have found it best to run Shaxon Black and Neutral (the only Shaxon colors I use) on SMALL parts with:
Temp (extruder) = 230
Infill Overlap (using Simplify) = 50%
Min infill length = 3.0mm

I think I am going to try a higher temp. To me it looks like the string is cooling too quickly and contracting. This is is causing those corners to pull inward. Maybe the pigment in these fluorescent colors require much more heat. I have used Shaxon basic colors in the past with no issues but I think I was printing at about 235 then.

I just started using my blue Shaxon filament and getting some of the warping on the 1st two parts I printed with it. I am upping my temperature from 220 to 235 and will see if it helps out. Do you guys think it could be a moisture issue?

In the two prints i did with the Shaxon filament. The nozzle never got dirty and I didn't have to clean with my brush. Every time I printed with the xyz filament i would have to clean after a print. Is that normal with other filament?

Another thing i noticed is the Shaxon filament is way more brittle vs the xyz stuff. Is that your experience?

Depends on the color. The hot pink stuff seems to break easy and has broken in the extruder gear on more than one occasion. Red, blue, and black have worked great for me in the past.

I have an oven at home that can get as low as 108c. I read that if you bake the filament at that temp for 3 to 4 hours it should dry it out. I am going to try raising the temp on my extruder first. If it is still bad I will try baking. The thing is, it was brand new and still vacuum sealed.

The temp at 235 seems to be working quite well so far. I also was thinking of baking the filament the more I googled. I opened  the air tight bag about 3 months ago and I leave the  my balcony window open of about 2 meters  24/7 with a fan 75% of the time in Los Angeles . The print is much larger then the last 2. Maybe its the cool down by the distance, but its seems to have no warps.I went bare glass with glue, please no more chips.

Well I tried a much higher temp and the sides look much better but the corners now stick up higher than the rest of the cube. Looks like over extrusion but my steps per mm are spot on for a given amount. So I have no ideal what is the issue with this neon colored stuff.

There is a huge temperature difference in the heated bed of the DaVinci. Hotter in the center, cooler at the edges. Some say to start the bed out hot and reduce the temp after the first few layers will help reduce the edge cooling faster than the center. Another is to assure that the inside case temperature remains constant, some people have added heaters to help this. Some of my large DaVinci prints have center scorching on the bottom of the part.
