Topic: Shaxon Filament: Word of Caution

I have used Shaxon filament from Frys several times with good results. However i bought yellow the other day as I wanted to change all the printed parts in my delta from black to yellow.

Well that roll has given me nothing but head aches. Can't even get the first layer of a motor mount printed. The filament snaps just below the gears as it is entering the feed tube and then jams. Twice I was lucky enough to haver a peice sticking from the feed tube I could grab with pliers. Twice I was not so lucky and had to tear the whole thing down and soak it for a few days in acetone.

So if you plan to use Yellow I would not suggest Shaxon.

Re: Shaxon Filament: Word of Caution

Sounds like it's probably damp and the boiling moisture is causing back pressure in the nozzle. If that filament company is worth their stuff, they will exchange with you - octave will do this if you receive a bad roll, regardless of where it was purchased. I'd call them because this may not be a problem on their end - it was likely stored poorly.

Re: Shaxon Filament: Word of Caution

I've been using Shaxon (neutral and black) and Hatchbox black, and 5 different colors from XYZ - no problems.

Regardless of the brand, the filament is hydroscopic and should be stored in a dry container (you'll notice how important this is when you see bags of desiccant in the plastic wrap, a cartridge container and the center of the spool...).

Best practice (IMO) is to store it in a sealed food container with cheap white rice (about one cup or more).  I see photo's of folks hanging spools on the back of the printer - that's fine but, if the spool hangs for days in the ambient environment and you live in a usually damp place such as Oregon, as I do, well, fault yourself, not Shaxon/other...  If you hang it, try enclosing it in plastic bag with desiccant/rice.

You can look at a photo of the useable container I gimmied up - look for my post with the photo...

Edit - forgot to mention, I've bought Shaxon at Amazon and down the street at Fry's.  No problems.  The fellow at Fry's told me their inventory is more than one year old.  Still, no problems as long as it's dry.  Also, I set the extrude temp to 220 deg.

Re: Shaxon Filament: Word of Caution

I don't know,, I've had certain colors print badly and others just fine,, I print all brands,, noticed a new cartridge of xyz was brittle,, I think it boils down to how it is made originally and what is used to make it..,, More recycled stuff getting into the mainstream filament lines these days. I've printed with filament I've had open for nearly a month and it should've been wet,, but printed fine.. My reddish colored xyz filament was hardly useable.. Who knows? I just ordered 5 new rolls from Suppliesoutlet.. I've used them before with pretty good luck   as well as MCMelectronics.. They have reasonable prices,,  I extrude at 215-220C also.  Seems like colors are harder to print than neutral. Happy printing ya'll ..

Re: Shaxon Filament: Word of Caution

I just had the same problem with filament snapping right below the gears with some Hatchbox glow in the dark green.  Out of 35+ spools I have run through the XYZ of many different manufactures this was the first I had this happen with.  Happened like 3 out of the 5 times I tried to print with it.  It also did not extrude well at all once id did print, there were gaps in the printing.  I tried increasing the heat by 10 deg but it didn't make a difference.  Other Hatchbox prints great for me, it was just this color.  This was a brand new factory sealed shrink wrapped spool with desiccant packs inside.

My yellow from Shaxon was the same. Still vacuum sealed but would break as described.  If it did print the color was dull and hat a really flat look. It had a weird rough texture to what was but down in either case gonna steer clear of that yellow for a while.
