Topic: Filament gear intermittent issue, yes I've read the other threads.

so, im having an issue with this filament gear, grub screw, etc.  ill make this short as possible, heres a video.

that was just a test extrusion of 100mm.

Extruder heated to 250c, filament is ABS.  have tried other brand ABS filaments here, same issue. 

hopefully someone out there has a fix for this because i have set and reset and resetset and reresetset that fucking wheel with that fucking screw many times within the last 24 hours, and i cant seem to fix this issue.  as soon as i try and print something, the wheel wont turn at all, just a constant thumping.

If you are at 250 then you are cooking and hardening the ABS in the nozzle and causing it to jam. You should never need to go above 230 for ABS. Ckean it up and try a lower temp.

its worse at a lower temp, (but just to make sure, i just cleaned everything out and re assembled and it is indeed much worse) i was instructed to put it at a higher temp by another press user.  also, im quite sure 250c was the default print temp for soliprint no?  i dont use it.

I regularly print on my press with ABS at 240 or 250.

Have you adjusted the trim pot for the extruder? That can help in some cases.

i have not, i did however just take the board out and take an ohm meter to the extruder harness to make sure there was a connection and the meter made a nice solid 'beep' on each attempt so im ruling out that i need to re solder the connectors on the stepper end of the harness as i read elsewhere thats been an issue that has popped up for some. 

i see the trimpots on the board, but ill be honest and say im not sure which one is the one i would adjust for the extruder stepper.

you may be onto something though, i just took the board back out and put a voltmeter on the trimpot closest to the E plug on the board and im only getting 1.037v, i believe i read somewhere that the voltage for that should be 1.5v. 

ill have to mess with it more tomorrow after work.  but hopefully that pans out to be the issue.  strange that it wasnt an issue for the first few weeks that i had the printer, and now it is.

Happen to know where I should be checking for the voltages? I was checking the trimpot itself (I'm new at this stuff) which in doing some more reading seems to be the incorrect way to do this.

Oh. I was looking at this http://wiki.solidoodle.com/multimeter-testing

And it was showing the multimeter probes testing something other then the trimpots themselves.

*shrug* I don't really know. I just upped mine until it started printing more smoothly. I don't really know what the voltage is.

From what I can see in that image, that is actually a kind of silly way to adjust the voltage. That green chip is the current sense resistor, which is something like a 0.3 Ohm resistor to ground. The other probe looks like it is on the reference voltage, which is what you really care about. Ideally you would be going from a direct ground to the reference line.

Ok. So. I could do the listening for bad noises then back it off a bit method. Lol. Or if I wanted to check it with a voltmeter i would just put the probes on the trimpot itself. One on each leg on the side of the trimpot that has 2 legs not the opposite which has 1.

Again, if this seems like a stupid question, this is my first rodeo.

Yeah, I think that is right. Mostly what I did was adjust the voltage while I was printing something, and then listen to see when it started to sound better.

I'll give that a shot tomorrow. The more I read about people adjusting them the more it seems as if people do just that and not bother with a voltmeter.

Yes.  Adjusted the trimpot for the extruder stepper.

The correct place to measure the voltage is the one leg on its own, and then the one on the side with 2 pins which is nearest the connectors for the stepper motors.

I measured from the 2 pin side to the chassis of the power input (total board power supply input). This ensures you are getting the correct voltage through the entire board rather than just that one component.
