Topic: DaVinci 1A clicking extruder and printing only first layer... Solved

Hi all,
I just got my Da Vinci 1A, and been pretty happy so far.

HOWEVER, for all new users out there, beware that despite the instructions say the printer is fully adjusted, mine actually WAS NOT.

I thought I was looking at the printer doing the first layer, and then simply stopping printing (no plastic getting out of the extruder).

So I found these posts talking about issues printing the first layer only, and the extruder "clicking"...

I soon realized that the nozzle was directly on top of the glass, at the beginning of the print.
The "Layer" I thought I was seeing being printed was actually the glue being smeared around and maybe some thin film of plastic... However, there was hardly any plastic on that first "layer".

After that, the glass would lower but no plastic would come off the nozzle, probably because it was jammed already.

The clicking of the extruder was due to the nozzle being directly on the glass and therefore occluded by it! No way it could push the plastic out...
I even tried to manually push the filament through the extruder, while the printer was trying to print the first layer, but the filament was not moving a millimeter!

All I had to do was adjust the height of the glass (lower it) using the 3 adjustment screws and sure enough the printer worked perfectly.

So, for the very beginners like me: look closely at what your printer is doing. In the beginning of a print, if the nozzle and its reflection on the glass are touching, it means the nozzle is too close to the glass to let any plastic out!

The "First Layer" is important because the plastic needs to be fully attached to the glass or you will get a filament "spaghetti", but at the same time there must be enough room for the plastic to be able to get out of the nozzle.

I had to turn the screws 1 and 1/2 time each to see the plastic getting out from the beginning (first layer).

Maybe your printer is adjusted differently, but still, do not trust it will ship perfectly adjusted, because things my shift during shipping, or the printer simply is not adjusted correctly.

Hope this helps,
So far this printer is amazing for its cost! (including the simple but efficient software XYZware!).

Regards
