Topic: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

Hello all.

My printer has been running fine and suddenly it will not reach the proper temperature. If I manually set the temp higher, it will go. But if I hit "print" and it waits for the extruder it will never reach the temp. I'm using repetier, and I'm guessing its a software problem... Any ideas?

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

If you are using repetier then should be preheating the bed to full temp, then the extruder to full temp using the manual controls before hitting print.

Try preheating then print. If the temp goes down then your slicer settings are calling for a lower temp then your machine default.

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

I do. By heating manually I mean: If the target heat is 222*C, then I have to manually set it to 240*C, wait for it, then start the print. However, this only worked once or twice, and now its not working either. It gets up to 213, then drops to 210, then back up to 213, etc.

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

So you are daying that your set temp is actually 20 or higher than the actual print temp?

What thermistor did you choose in your firmware? Did you maybe change itm Have you tried to autotune the PID?

Do you have a fan that hits the nozzle instead of the fins? A part cooling fan will blow on the nozzle, but its output should be very low. It is meant to just cool the layer slighty faster than ambient air. If you have too much air hitting the nozzle the heater cannot maintain temps.

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

I'm not even sure what the PID is but I have seen those settings. The thermistor is set to whatever Folgertech provided with the kit.

Fan is pointed at the fins.

You know... I forgot about the reset button on RAMPS, I did that and its working this time. Hopefully it stays working.

What is your cooling fan setup? Any blowing directly on the heatblock?

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

I havn't modified the Folgertech kossel kit at all. The fan is blowing at the fins, but it could be hitting the heating block a bit.

So far the RAMPS reset is working.

One successful print and now its doing it again. If you look at the graph you can see where it was at 222, then drops when my print finished, then I turned on manual control to preheat to 222, and you can see it oscillating around 211.

Weird how the first one worked...

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

Does it drop befor the head moves or as/after it moves?

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

The big drop was after I finished a successful print. When I turned it back on it went strait up to 210 then stopped.

I think its repetier... I just turned off the hot end to try to auto-tune the PID and the hot end is still on. If I try to disconnect, it asks "do you want to turn off the heaters?" I press yes, and nothing happens and also repetier doesn't disconnect. Weeeird.

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

I autotuned the PID, it didn't work. The only thing that is working is closing and opening repetier between prints. >_>

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

Forgot to order the LCD controller so that's a no go. I guess I'll just have to close repetier every time.

Cura host works well, you might consider trying it if you dont mind configuring another host. Simplify3d works very well as well but its not free or cheap.

Reinstalled repetier. Got blue screen of death then had to do startup recovery. But it works now!??! OK tongue

Re: [Solved] Extruder not reaching temperature

What version of RH are you using? I have had the odd issue with mine from time to time (the "it wont turn off/disconnect" thing) on the old computer we had... cant tell you how many times I had to do a hard restart on it because it would lock up completely.
Never really had temp issues tho...

Also, how much memory does your computer have? and how many other things are running in the background?

Upgraded our computer not too long ago from an old IBM Lenovo/Win XP box with only 2Gig of Ram to a refurbished Win 7 and added gobs of memory to it (12Gig in total - came with 4gig installed) - haven't had a problem since. I can even browse the net, and/or run 123D Design (a memory hog) while running a print with no problems.

Have also run 2 printers from the same computer at the same time with no problems. smile
