I use solidworks. It is a bit more suited for 3D design, as AutoCad is more geared toward two-dimensional design such as architectural work and blueprints, albeit it does have some 3D capabilities.

Not sure what you're wanting to do, but Sketchup http://www.sketchup.com/ is not too bad for simpler projects. Plus it's free.

I use solidworks and esprit both are awesome for 3d modeling. They take some learning to use though

I use ACAD MEP, Inventor and Solidworks.  All supplied for office, and each serving for better jobs in certain areas.
SW and Inventor are very similar in strength, with SW being edged slightly in user interface.(IMO)
as for purchase of autocad, try autodesk website.  if you are a student and just getting into the software, they give a free license for 2 or 4 years, I can't remember
