Topic: Best solvent for PC/nylon

Any recommendations for dissolving nylon plastic ?
I need a good solvent to dissolve nylon and other polycarbonate materials.
I used acetone for ABS and it worked okay. I dont want any strong acids that might disintegrate the plastic

One you move beyond ABS the solvents needed are chemicals that you would not want near your home or use without a respirator and protective clothing.

Case in point, PLA is dissolved by a chemical called Tetrahydrofuran. It develops explosive peroxides if allowed to evaporate. That is just one of it's set backs. We won't even get into the health issues.

In the case of PC two good solvents for polycarbonate are dimethylformamide and 1,4-dioxane (often just named dioxane).  Again not chemicals you would even want in your neighborhood.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

What would you need to dissolve the materials for? If it is for smoothing, stick with sandpaper and paint if needed. If it's for clogging, stick with a butane torch.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: Best solvent for PC/nylon

One of the big selling points for nylon and polycarbonate from a material standpoint is that they are both fairly resistant to solvents. It's why nylon is used for tubing much of the time. Anything that will dissolve them will also do a number on you.

Yup, it is for clogging. I just want an easy way to just wipe the parts clean. I dont have a torch, thats why preferred to use chemicals.

Thanks Carl, I will probably try it once in a safe env and see how it works.

You are going to find a 30 dollar torch with butane included much cheaper than those chemicals. I also think dioxane requires a license.

Re: Best solvent for PC/nylon

Clearing clogs should be done with a cold pull. A butane torch doesn't remove non-flammable debris.

Everything is flammable at the right temperature.
