Topic: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

I did a 15mm cube test print today because i was noticing some wierd surface finish patterns, and some parts were not fitting together the way they should.  I've attached an image to show the measurements of the cube after it came out of the machine.  One strange observation is the waviness or offsetting every few layers on the front side of the part, which gradually taper off near the back side of the part.

I've gone through a tightened the belts, but they probably could be tighter.  I've aligned the X carriage to the Y pulleys at the front.  I've also already fixed loose bushings on the open side of the z carriage, which hasn't seemed to make much of a difference.  Does anyone have any info that may be of any help in fixing this?

I'm running Simplify3d for a slicer, and running XYZ 1.0.6 firmware on the machine.

Does your bed or glass have any side to side movement?

The only side to side movement in the bed is by pushing somewhat hard on the bed and watching the two vertical guide rods deflect.  The glass itself is snug to the base, and doesn't move.

Check your bearing mounts for the rods the white pulleys are on. Some have had those cracked. A wavy pattern on one side would indicate the part is moving or the head is moving in a way to create that pattern but you should see it on both sides of that axis. Could you post a picture of the printed cube?

Re: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

This is not the cube, but a closeup of a different part.  I think it illustrates the wave offset between the layers a little bit better.

I'm also still wondering if the trapezoid shape i'm getting (shown in the measurements) is about as good as i'm going to get, or if I should be able to get it equal and square on all sides.

Thanks for the help,
-James

Re: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

To be honest, those measurements don't look too bad for the Da Vinci.
The only one I might be slightly concerned about is the y axis, 0.3mm is a little more out than I would expect.
There was another thread about this a while back and I seem to remember most folk saying a margine of up to 0.2mm was to be expected with a Da Vinci and you need to allow for this when designing your own models/parts.

I wasn't too concerned with the x axis... more with the y axis.  And really just the difference between the two.  If they were both iver or under, I could compensate, but when they are out of tolerance in different directions,  it's tough...  it also makes it so the holes and circles are not round, which I know there have been several threads about.

Re: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

Just measured a 15mm cube I printed the other day with S3D, the x is 15.18mm and y is 14.8mm so quite a difference.
I had the oval circles issue for a while but fixed it by shimming the white pulleys.

Re: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

Actually I think those dims are way off. When I print my 20mm cube at filament changes I consistently gey 19.98 on the Y, 20.01 on the X, 20.00 on the Z. Thats from corner to corner and flat to flat.

But I might add I am not running on a stock controller or firmware.

Re: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

I think the stock firmware is the problem.
It's not possible to tweak it to correct these discrepancies.

Re: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

Just tried another cube with ABS this time (the last one I tried was with Timberfill).
This time I got 15.03mm in the X and 15.24 in the Y. Possibly something to do with the ABS shrinking ??
I notice in S3D there is an option in the "Other" tab named "Horizontal size  compensation" which might help with this issue ....

Edit : Just tried this with a value of -0.05mm and got 14.93mm in the X and 15.15 in the Y.
Close enough for me !

Thanks for trying again.  I am printing in ABS, and I have a cooling fan in the side panel.  Was your print perfectly square, or are there some variations in your measurements from side to side measuring at the corners?

Re: Davinci 1.0a cube test, not printing square.

Some very minor variations, like +/-0.05mm or so.
I'd call it pretty damn near perfectly square.
