I am not a huge fan of the default first layer that prints. Im not talking about the actual part being printed, rather the thick squiggly lines that kind of creates a bed for your part
is there any way to turn this off?

it's called the RAFT, you should be able to find it and turn it off. Which software are you using?

I suggest trying out the Repetier-Host/slic3r setup. Slic3r doesn't have a raft options so you dont have to even worry about it and Reptier-Host offers a much better user experience than pronto

for what it's worth, I've been printing with skeinforge and pronterface for 5 months and still have no problems with it. I know everyone is quick to switch away because that's what the big dogs are doing but you can get great results with the original setup once you learn the software.
Oh ya Pronto/Skein will get the job done for sure. Repetier-Host just allows real easy placement and rotation of the stl file and easily adding multiple stl's to the plate to print. And slic3r just has a better gui then skeinforge. So you spend less time mucking around in setting screens and more time getting to your task.
Here is Solidoodle's blog post on their .1mm and .3mm slic3r profiles along with setup instructions.
The main attraction for me was the speed. A Yoda took 90 minutes to slice with Skeinforge, and only 5 with Slic3r. No going back after that.

lawsy, oh man I totally blocked that nightmare waste of time out of my life! Skeinforge just made it harder for me to learn about my 3d printer because of that added slicing downtime. Now that I use slic3r, slicing time is so inconsequential that I don't even think about it anymore.

My experience was that Skeinforge was so slow that I couldn't bear it: Slic3r is much faster, in my experience. And Repetier Host is simple and intuitive and integrated.

RH is very nice indeed. I tried it out, but had some weirdness with it controlling my SD. I do use it for placing multiple STLs into a single print.
Since most of the parts I print are unseen, I really don't need to mess with .1mm printing just yet, so I am going to stick with the Pronterface/ReplicatorG/Skeinforge combo for now.
Now that I am running a monstrous PC, it's not so bad... I just start a slice and do something else for a while.
