Topic: Need a new printer - looking for suggestions

Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase another printer and would like to hear what you guys recommend.

Here's what i'm looking for -

  • Must be able to print at higher temperatures

  • Must be able to print faster

  • Large build volume

  • Open-source material

  • Dual-print head preferred

  • Prebuilt preferred (no kit)

  • Cost is not an issue

This will be used in an office environment and will run pretty much all day during business hours and overnight for larger prints.

I'm open to any suggestions! Thanks in advance

another potential offering... http://ordsolutions.com/our-3d-printers/rova3d/

Fairly new on the market, so I have no idea how well it works, but we do have a new member here that has one...maybe she could enlighten us a little on it?

It is hard to tell from the pictures I can find. Are these built using a core XY motion with fishing line? It sort of looks like that.

Comes with a digital caliper, feeler gauges, side cutters, an infrared thermometer, even wrenches, extra kapton tape and a nut driver. Plus a tablet running Windows 8? As far as accessories go, this one takes the cake.

Plus it has five hot ends all running at independent temperatures.. looking really good so far

My question is, for the extra $1k, would the "cool muscle" stepper motors be worth it? ($4,500 with standard stepper motors)

I have one, and it is amazing! Of course, I'm brand new to 3D printing, so any 3D printing would look amazing!

Here is what I can say for sure about the Rova:

Customer service is beyond awesome!
High resolution, high speed, very large build volume
Comes assembled, but tweaking till your eyes bleed. (ok not much tweaking, but x5 haha)
liquid cooled, spool holders x 5
I am brand new and already loving it.

RoVa3D with five nozzles (first nozzle down, four to go)
Slic3r and Pronterface
Filastruder and Filawinder - soon enough
Current hurdles - humidity, offsets

Re: Need a new printer - looking for suggestions

I should also say, I have yet to finish an actual print. Most of my prints are just testers, and the one big one I tried has failed multiple times, but I've learned more from that series of fails than all the test prints!

I've only worked on it maybe 15 hours so far. Brand brand new with it, but I'm impressed so far. There has been a lot of customer service because of shipping issues, and some setting up uncertainties. They've been great so far!

I don't have the tablet, or the tools, or the enclosure, filter, etc. I DO have the upgraded motors, and I like them. I don't know what the original motors would be like by comparison.

I would recommend getting the tools, I chose not to, and have already spent more on the tools, lol. I can never have enough tools, though, and that's exactly why I wanted to get my own. Still, I've been without the correct size a few times.

I think the motors were in case you planned on doing a super amount of printing. I will be manufacturing if all goes well, so that was my plan.

We are manufacturing also; we have two printers currently and are looking to expand. It will be in an office environment running small prints during hours and large ones overnight. How loud are the motors? The tech I spoke with on the phone said that the motors were quieter and had more torque and could run faster.

The Rova is attractive to me because I print with a lot of different materials, mostly PC but also PC-ABS, nylon, ABS, and whatever else we might experiment with later. It would make things a lot simpler if all I have to do is select a different tool in the slicer instead of changing a spool.

What kind of problems have you had? Fifteen hours is a good bit of time. I understand some of that is learning the ropes and making mistakes that we all do (I'm fairly new to 3D printing too and still make rookie mistakes).

Customer service is also important to me (if something goes wrong I want to be sure it'll be taken care of promptly) - were they happy to help you every time you called/emailed them, and did they respond quickly? One particular company (whom I unfortunately bought my first printer from) has really bad customer service - as a matter of fact they want you to pay extra for it; if you don't pay, you get 2 months of "free" support which is limited to email only, and after that you would have to pay $100 per issue.

Thanks for your input!

Re: Need a new printer - looking for suggestions

Josh - I work for Fusion3... a couple things I'd like to point out.

Fusion3's printers are all about commercial and higher-ed applications.

1) We pride ourselves in ensuring that our printers work right out of the box (no tweaking, we provide material profiles optimized for our printers and will create new profiles for you if you find interesting / novel materials to work with).

2) VERY durable design and construction. Stringent calibration and QA ensures great printing and tested to continue to run for thousands of hours.

3) Commercial-Grade Service & Support. Different options to keep your printer up and running - make the most of your investment.

Hope you'll contact us to learn more. Our company and manufacturing operations are located in Greensboro, NC.

Also, we invite everyone here to schedule a 45 min web demo with us to learn more about our printer.

BTW - always get a laugh when folks talk about 'fishing line'. The fibre line we use resists stretching and is just one part of how our printers maintain calibration and are able to print for long periods of time than the 'hobby' printers out there today.

Re: Need a new printer - looking for suggestions

igolfchip - Thanks for joining the discussion! I would love to set up a demo.

I just put in for a quote as well.

Greensboro is really close to me (I am on the NC/SC border) - how hard would it be to stop in to take a look? Thanks!

*EDIT: Greensboro is about 2 and a half hours away. Still interested in a visit

Hey! There are folks with every bit as stringent requirements for their fishing line :-).

Actually what I wonder about now is if the huge range of motion for a 12x12 area causes problems with the cable "walking" up and down
the drive cylinder and if there are special mechanisms involved to deal with that.

I would guess that is directed at me wink

I would love a web demo and am curious as to the rating of the line you are using.

Re: Need a new printer - looking for suggestions

Problems I have had, almost ALL my own learning curve:

Installation of software and setup issues slowed me way down at the start. All me there.
partial test prints and failed prints: mostly getting used to Slicer, Pronterface, temps, and bed/extruder levelling.
Other failed prints: windows damned update, power outages during storm.

Printer issues out of the box, shipping had a sensor tripped, and so I knew there could be bits of extra work.
loose set screws in several places, causing little issues and mis prints.
set screw for gear that drives filament loosened, so the filament stopped mid print. adjusted easy.
X axis had come loose during shipping, connected it back easily, tightened set screws, adjusted sensor.
Flickering LEDs for a few minutes once, and Y axis belt piece rises during print, so the bed hits it occasionally, or the belt comes off mid print. Haven't informed customer service of the issue yet.
Another gear started making a minor vibrating, needs a tweak in there somewhere, too.

so far, considering I'm a brand new beginner, it has all been very minor and easy to fix issues. Mostly set screws. As for service, I'm having great service in the start up stages. I don't know how it will be later on, but they have jumped at every chance to help, and often are waiting for me to get back to them. I am not in any extra paid service program, so I don't know how it will be after that. They do have an active forum with other users who can help, too.

Motors are very quiet. I have the dampeners added to mine to make them even quieter. Only because it is in my bedroom office for the first few months. I'm now thinking I may have been just fine without the dampeners, since it will be moving into a separate office once we move.

I am not comfortable leaving it printing overnight, but that is my lack of experience. I am not familiar enough with 3D printers to effectively compare it to other models, but I am very impressed with how strong and sturdy it is, and with the high quality parts in the machine.

I really do wish I had had it for a year already, to give you a much better idea, they are just so new to the market.

Re: Need a new printer - looking for suggestions

Before I had purchased this type of machine, I had looked at some of the normal professional print websites. But found that their cost was unaffordable. And also I am not familiar with 3D printers. My friend suggested me some good 3d-printer websites that are really good for me.
