Topic: old wooden puzzle modeled and printed.

I know this little guy isn't as nicely printed as some, but I am still pretty proud of it.

Had forgotten about the little wooden puzzle that has been in the family for years until I recently rediscovered it while going thru some of my late mother's things. The original is made of wood, and stamped "Japan" on the bottom, and in kind of rough shape - the ears were broken and glued back together, and there are other little bits broken out as well. It stands all of 54mm high. I really like these kinds of puzzles and remember playing with the wooden one as a kid.

So I got out my calipers, took it apart and started taking measurements, then began modeling it in 123D Design. It took me a while to get all of the pieces modeled (13 pieces) and I hoped fitted correctly with just enough space between them to make assembly easy, yet snug enough.

I finally got to run a test print of it yesterday - run at 0.3 layer height in black ABS at 3/4 size to cut down on the print time. After cleaning up the brim from all 13 pieces, amazingly, it fit together perfectly! I am so happy! 3/4 size stands just shy of 40mm tall.

Now to refine the smaller layer height settings and reprint at full size!

here he is along with the wooden original...

Re: old wooden puzzle modeled and printed.

That's great! I love the way people use 3d printing to bring back the old and classics big_smile Are you planning on sharing your STL files? I'd love to throw in a 0.2mm nozzle and see how small I could print one

very nice! I too like these old puzzles since childhood. I have a ball version made of plastic about size of golfball. yes please share the finished stl on Thingiverse. maybe they will feature it. I also have been looking for people doing this with the old Crackerjack plastic toys that you had to assemble from a small spru of parts

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Making STLs for that sort of thing should be pretty easy. Start with the 2d shape and then just extrude to the right height. Do you have any pictures of the kind of toy you are talking about? If there are some good high res ones I can give it a go. A fun little project while the printer does its thing on a different job.

Re: old wooden puzzle modeled and printed.

Thanks guys. smile

Not really sure about sharing the STLs... yet... Still kinda of playing around with things. Maybe in the near future.
Was just really excited to have the first try come out as well as it did, and have everything actually fit together right! LOL Had been working on this one for more than a month now (a little here, a little there), and finally printing it out and having it in my hands was just, well, very cool! LOL

Have only had the printer since mid February (purchased used, and getting it to run reliably has been a challenge), and I have only been modeling stuff since about then, too. 123d Design isn't the greatest program out there, but it was free and relatively easy to use. I figure I didn't do too badly modeling this and having everything fit together right on the first print.
The fun piece was the ears - they have to be able to rotate in order to fit things together, and the ears are what hold everything in place once it is assembled.

n2ri - like TheBaron said, if you have some good pictures (or even one of the originals that can be measured), it should be possible to recreate the pieces.

When I was modeling the elephant, I found that making the "material" transparent glass and making each piece a different color so I could easily see how things were fitting together - especially the spacing between the pieces - made it much easier to complete the entire model. Once I had all the pieces modeled and fitting at what I thought were appropriate spacing tolerances, I laid all the pieces out flat on the grid and created the STL files for printing. I got really lucky on the spacing tolerances on the first try.

Re: old wooden puzzle modeled and printed.

This is the kind of thing I'll be doing!! OK well I hope to be doing smile
It looks awesome!!

RoVa3D with five nozzles (first nozzle down, four to go)
Slic3r and Pronterface
Filastruder and Filawinder - soon enough
Current hurdles - humidity, offsets

Re: old wooden puzzle modeled and printed.

hoping it will look even more awesome now that I (hopefully) have the E3D dialed in a little better - was fighting with moire issues on the 4988 stepper - now have an 8825 on for the extruder and I think I finally have the moire under control - need to run something a little larger than the little test tag I did the other night. Should know for sure Saturday.
