Topic: Press Thermister

Hi All

It seems I am im need of a new thermister to replace mine, does anyone know where these can be purchased, i dont see anything on the Solidoodle website.  Or if anyone knows of an alternative that could be used instead.

Just order them up from filastruder.

I just found a short in mine too. From this thread it sounds like the thermistor may be a Semitec 104GT-2. It looks similar but thermistors all look the same to me.

I don't believe that is a drop-in replacement. That thread was really discussing the E3D thermistor.

The stock Press firmware uses Marlin firmware table 1 (for Epcos 100k). To get accurate temps with the 104GT-2 you'd need to recompile/reflash the firmware configured with table 5.

Soliwiki claims Epcos B57540G0104F000 is compatible for SD printers as of 2103, but that obviously predates the Press. That part uses table 1, so it would be plausible for the Press.  (http://www.soliwiki.com/List_of_compatible_hardware)

Here is a link to the one I purchased for my press. Used them for both extruder and bed. Drop in replacement, no firmware changes required.

I purchased one from Amazon - the NTC 3950 100k Thermistor (for a RepRap 3D printer bed or hot end).

Did I purchase the correct thermistor?

Nice & cheap. Did you find the beta, or verify the resulting temp?  Also, idealy you'd crank down the max temp in the firmware, as that seems to be rated for only 270, and the Press limits to 280. (No fun having a typo destroy your rig.)

How would I go about changing the firmware to a different resistor? I have the E3D upgrade but no matter how many times I flash it, it will read 280C when I can melt ABS like its 230. I might also need help compiling it into a HEX file

Download the firmware sources from the SD support page, unzip, and in configuration.h, modify the definition of TEMP_SENSOR_0 on line 145 to select the thermistor of choice. (read the comments in the fiile) Then build and flash. MacgyverX's topic on this, or the Marlin firmware support pages would have better directions than I could hope to give (My Press is pretty much stock. I have my own printer project to experiment on. smile )

I contacted Solidoodle support about this and they told me they could send one for $35.75 including shipping (east coast USA) which just seems insane to me.

How did you physically connect this to your printer? I don't currently have access to a soldering iron...

Yes, that's price gouging, since the similar item for the SD4 is $10, not $30. (wire length and connector are different).  Feel free to call them out on this on their FB page.

I had to solder my thermistor in and use heat shrink tubing to cover it. I would suggest picking up a soldering iron, watch some youtube videos, and practice. It is a very useful skill to have when owning a 3d printer. $35 is a scam, especially considering the $3 one from ebay is 100% identical physically and functionally to the solidoodle one. The labeling on the wiring is even the same.

For $35 you could get a soldering iron, heat shrink, 5 thermistors, connectors, and the wire to hook it up. That's ridiculous

SD3 w/ RUMBA (8825s), merlin hot end (in pieces). Ender3 w/ silent board for PLA printing. Ender5 w/ silent board, e3d v6, new z lead screw, and glass bed. DiY Kossel w/ smoothieboard (in pieces). Vellman Vertex (in pieces)
Shapeoko2 router in process of being converted to laser engraver (in pieces)
Multicam 5000 series CNC Router w/ 11HP spindle, 5x10' table, and auto tool changer (in pieces)

I bought 3 of the thermistors from eBay (using the above link) and they look almost identical to the Solidoodle Press ones besides the connector on the bottom. The cables look a bit smaller and are not connected like the Solidoodle ones but that is fine. I had trouble fishing the wire through but eventually got it.

I decided to cut the old thermistor cable and connect them like you see in the picture below. The thermistor seemed to be giving accurate temperature readings and so I started putting it back together but I overtightened the set screw and broke the wire again. Off to rewire it again with a new thermistor...

Moral of the story, Don't over-tighten the set screw!
