Has anyone tried the DaVinci Jr.? What one is better
Anyone? I'm trying to decide what to get for my first 3D printer
They are basically the same, the Jr just has half the volume of the 1.0..

Thanks. In your opinion what would be better, the Da Vinci Jr or Printrbot Simple Maker's Kit 1405?
?

Have no experience with a Printrbot..
Apparently the junior only prints PLA and does not have a heated build plate.
I have rented a Printrbot Simple recently and I have got to say, the look of it makes you want to mod it. There are some mods out there that can make a simple's x axis to 300mm!(probably even more if you want to) And you can also add a heated bed, so you can do ABS. Ninjaflex works with it too, and probably other exotics.
So in my opinion, the da vinci 1.0 beats the junior in terms of size and price, and the printrbot simple beats both of them in terms of price, configurable build size, and customization.
If you have a microcenter near you you may want to pay a visit. the have the Davinci 1.0 and the print bots.
From what I understand the biggest disadvantage with the Davinci is you have to use there filament out of the box. there are workarounds like flashing different firmware and using re setters but these will void the warranty. The reason the davinci is so cheap is the business model relies on filament sales for profit they sell the printers on a slim margin. The davinci has an sd card slot and lcd display so it will run on its own.
I have talked to several friends that have the pint bot. All in all they have a good rep. They are smaller so more portable they are open framed so more for pla than abs. They will use any brand of filament. The pb iirc does have a sd card or display so you will need to run off the computer.
With the right amount of tlc and tuning either machine will make good prints.
The Davinci 1.0 has a huge footprint compared to the print bot. On the other hand the case on the davinci looks more like a appliance and less like a robot.
The printbot gives more choices for filament and software out of the box than Davinci that is unless you want to void the warranty on the first day.
I suggest you read some reviews and maybe look at some you tube videos .
I jumped in on a used solidoodle4 for my first printer notice i said used so no warranty to fall back on.
Note I do not personalty own a davinci or a printbot so owners of these machines please feel free to jump in.

Just a note, Unless you buy an XYZ Printing product from Amazon, Microcenter, or other AUTHORIZED (very important word there) you have no warranty. XYZ will not honor warranties for machines bought on eBay regardless of if they are sold as new.

I wouldn't state that so categorically. Like I've said in this forum in the past, I also bought my davinci on eBay and XYZ did service my fried control board under warranty. Perhaps it's up to the local tech service you have to deal with and I was just lucky.

What do you mean by local tech service? Most of us do all of our own service and repair. If you went through some sort of repair center the that might be why they honored the warranty.
I bought mine on ebay and it arrived with a warped but usable X rod. When I contacted them to ask if I could purchase one they said it was a part they could not sale and they would have to replace the entire printer. They asked me for a copy of my receipt and location I purchased it from as well as the serial number. I told them ebay and no receipt. They came back with the following. "We are sorry but ebay nor sellers on ebayis not an authorised retailers for our products.
We also verified your serial number as a unit that was exchanged but never returned.
A lot of ebay sellers are buying returned unites at a reduced price from places like Amazon, and Microcenter and then selling them as is. Those stores are accepting the reduced purchase price over the hassle of trying to ship the units back to xyz for credit.
If you are lucky enough to have a local tech center that works on something like a 3d printer that is awsome. Here in the Dallas area no such place exist. You do the work yourself or you replace the entire unit.
Mine just came in two days ago. It took probably 10 minutes to unbox, ten minutes to set up, 3 minutes to slice an stl, and 3 hours to print a small bust of Greedo. I was extremely surprised with the ease of use and print quality. I completely expected my print to end in utter failure. The only problem I'm having is sourcing the stupid NFC filament. Amazon says the lead time is 1 to 2 months. I'm watching another thread on here monitoring the NFC tags hopefully it'll get cracked soon. The ribbon cable was disconnected from the printer head when I unboxed it, but it was a snap to plug it back in because the printer head pops right off.
TLDR; Besides not being able to buy filament, the printer seems to be easy to use and hassle free right out of the box.
Certainly sounds like a good buy at £300 or $350.
Even better once it's been jail broken and you can use 3rd pary filament.

It would be better if it could do ABS as well. PLA only is just too limiting.

True.
I take it the only thing preventing it from printing ABS is the lack of heated bed and the chipped filament ?

Most likely and the extruder may not be able to get hot enough. It has s lot of plastic housing around it. Knowing hoe XYZ has s custom formulation for ABS that melts at much lowet than normal 190. They may have done the same with the PLA.
