Topic: Workbench lockup!

Hello! I have had my Workbench for about a week now. I am currently experiencing pretty bad prints. Sort of to be expected but that's not my biggest issue. During some runs the printer locks up and dose not recover with out a hard restart. I have Rebooted the printer as well as the computer and have even opened up the cover for the mobo so as to allow some more ventilation.

I have used the Soliprint which I have stopped using due to the center being off of the print bed so I am using the repetier host. I think I have done all that I can as far as RTFM.

Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do?

I did not notice a Workbench area so if I have posted in the wrong area then my appoligies.

Focus on your USB connection and cable first (try a new cable).
Make sure you have no auto update software running and turn off any screensaver along with any power save features on your computer.

Thanks. Powersave options and screen saver are golden so I'll check out the rest. Hard to believe the cable is  bad with it being fresh out of the box but after reading through some of these posts...

It seems like a dedicated community around here so I believe ya wardjr!

So changed out several cables. Luckily I have several printer cables. Cant seem to let cables go. No help. Killed all services  that may be trying to update as well.

Only thing that I think it might be a heat issue with one of the boards. Ill be trying to compensate for that after I get some homework done as port my results. If all else fails then Ill have to swap out for my mega and a board I bought a while ago when I was attempting to build one from scratch. Ill be downgrading to a single extruder but maybe then Ill be able to get through a complete print!

A couple of pointers, keep the board cool.  I have not seen heat cause this issue before, skipped steps maybe.
Keep your motors cool if possible.
Check your error log and ensure it's not reporting something like "Max Temp".
If your LED's flicker you may have a bad PSU connection somewhere.

make certain your shell thickness is 1 mm or lower. I find my SD board crashes lwhen it tries to create anything larger than that.

That sounds like a slicer (Cura?) specific issue.  There is no reason you shouldn't be able to have as many perimeters as you want.  Consider upgrading what ever slicer you are using.  There are certain versions of Slic3r that would have some issues similar to this.  For example if there is an area of the print where there isn't enough space for the number of perimeters.  Going from one version to another will show different results.

Well Ive tried just about everything except taking a hammer to it. Ive reflashed the firmware from http://support.solidoodle.com/hc/en-us/ … urce-Files I also have run the boards separately  with out any connections except power and usb. It seems to me that it might be one of the devices. Stepper, thermistor, hotbed, extruder, the stars the moon. SpaceX. Hell who knows. Ill be trying to plug one item in at a time next. Wish it was an easy fix!

Probably I do use cura, and thanks. smile
Testing of issue will occur after my direct drive is installed. Yay parts arrived in less than 2 weeks. AMAZING!

We have all been there before but I can assure you a hammer won't help wink
Some screen shots or a video of the error happening may shed some light on the subject.  A loose connection on something is most likely the case if you aren't getting anything in the error log.

Yes I most assuredly know that the hammer is a last ditch effort and only for the short lived enjoyment and satisfaction of my own psyche!  So I took your suggestion and attempted to take video of a print. On a whim I decided to use Soliprint. I started it and left it with a cam running as I went to class. I come back and to my astonishment a full albeit not perfect print job. So now I will run a few more jobs with Soliprint to see if it hangs. If not then my problem must be with settings rather than hardware. Ill continue to post my successes or failures.

My workbench has stopped mid print a few times. It's not repeatable, it happens randomly. But it usually happens late into a print with some height. I have yet to have it happen to a large flat print. I'll reload the print and it will work just fine, so it's a random error. :\

I found out why my workbench was stopping mid print. Brown out of the power supply; a slight drop in voltage. My desktop computer, running the 3D printer software, and my laser printer share a wall plug. When my printer wakes up it draws too much power and causes a dip in power to my desktop. When this happens I hear the sound that a USB device was removed. I'm guessing the drop in voltage screws with the power to the USB hub causing an interruption in the communication with the 3D printer. I tested it and without fail when the laser printer starts the 3D printer dies mid job. Maybe a UPS for the computer would be good for keeping the printer running securely.

Well its been a few busy weeks with little time to tinker with the printer. I have however found the problem. I should have found it when wardjr told be to swap out my USB cable but x1320x zeroed me in to the issue. I have / had my printer attached to a USB powered hub. It seems that the hub was uncapable of using 3 ports out of 8 at one time. Once the printer was directly attached I havent had a single stoppage. Now for countless hours of settings adjusting, after finals! Thank you everyone!
