Topic: what slicing software to use with my SD3

I have makerbots, and they slice perfect for what I need.
I use rep host, on my SD3 it sucks.

kisslicer I have no idea how to use or get good results when I do try to use it.

what software should I use?

Re: what slicing software to use with my SD3

For my SD 3 I use repieter host with cura. It rocks, but it took me about a week of fvxxin with settings to get it to where i was happy. Can provide my settings if you want?

Same here. Repetier and Cura. I love it, but some people have had issues and prefer Slic3r. For me, Slic3r was a nightmare. Latest version will not produce support material for me, whatever I do with the settings. Cura is fast and easy, and I love the results. It's also a lot less picky with models, where Slic3r creates a lot of errors, missing sections etc. I know it's down to the models (usually Thingiverse downloads or remixes), but Cura manages to work with the exact same models.

yeah it would be awesome to get multiple peoples setting,
that way I can learn what im looking at by comparison.

ill be away for 4 days so when I get back ill look at this thread and knock this sucker out.

I downloaded cura after reading some happy reviews about it,
so I just need to learn it now. big_smile

I think its working just fine, just cant get the PLA to stick to the bed.

Re: what slicing software to use with my SD3

Sounds like you need to go into cura's filiment settings and raise the initial bed temperature.

So I raised the temp, messed with curator for a bit. The print quality is crappy. Not sure if something in curse process is breaking my model or what.

But mesh lab doesn't seem to fix it. Along with netfabb. It just won't load on netfabb and the fill is only 50,000kb

So why do makerbots print so well and I cannt get a finely tuned SD3 w/ E3D v6 to work lol

Re: what slicing software to use with my SD3

Hurrm.  If the object is spazzing out in nettfab, sounds more like an STL issue. IF you toss me it, I'm more than happy to have a look and see what i can see

Any Chance I could see your setting also? I'm also trying to dial in cura.

Thanks!

Re: what slicing software to use with my SD3

My SD2 is still humming (with the occasional hiccup-needing-repair), but skeinforge gave up the ghost a long time ago and now the new versions of slic3r are giving me slicing artifacts on overhangs, I'd love to see some solidoodle settings for cura. My initial attempts have been .. underwhelming.

Re: what slicing software to use with my SD3

So.. my settings
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/rantinan/cura%20spped%20and%20quality.png
Speed and settings. I didnt play wiht this too much
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/rantinan/cura%20struc.png
Structures. Most of the dialing in went here.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/rantinan/cura%20sextrusion.png
Extrusion. I dont remember what i played with in here, but it seems to work fine, just fine now. Word to the wise: If you're not using the MK5 lawsy extruder, you might wanna turn down the retraction. You SHOULD be using the mk 5. seriously. Go print one now.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/rantinan/cura%20sextrusion.png
PLA filament settings. Remember Cura likes to set a start temp, so its vital you set up profiles for your materials.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v652/rantinan/cura%20ABS.png
Abs filament settings (yup, i use ABS as my defualt)

As always, Your mileage may vary on these temps

For the love of god and all that is holy, dont forget to ajust your pre slice sliders
As a note. In my personal experience, Cura prefers to run either a sub 30% infill, or at 100% infill. With the above settings I find 20 % solid enough to hit with a hammer without breaking.
Happy printing

There's a drop down menu under the sl9ice button. My verison of RH comes with cura ,slic3r and skienforge as available options.... and its just the version i downloaded from repieter 3 months ago

Are you on Windows or Mac? RH for Mac only uses Slic3r and skeinforge.

I went to the RH website because this got me curious about an update to RH for Mac. I checked around and apparently there is one "in the works" for a few months now, but the person goes on to mention that it's not a top priority to get finished. sad Well we've been getting SoliPrint to work well with our Workbench now, but I would still love to see an updated RH.

Re: what slicing software to use with my SD3

I use Kisslicer the most, but a little of Slic3r for parts that Kisslicer had issues with. I haven't used Cura yet, but I want to later. I've put in all the settings, just haven't tried it yet.

There was a problem I had when I first started using my SD3 where the sliced models would look sporadic and what fixed it was setting the m83 command in the printer g-code if I remember right.

Meshmixer is great for pre-generating supports for complex/tall objects and others too depending on what you are doing.

I may just make a youtube video on how to use Kisslicer because the ones I've seen on there aren't complete or totally accurate.
