Topic: Pyroceram Glass for heated bed
So, I was looking at sources for a chipped bed, and called a local glass company looking for "fireplace glass".
They had Pyroceram glass and an 8" x 8" (asked for rough estimate - 3/16" thick) sheet runs $22.
I was looking this stuff up, it seems superior to Borosilicate Glass in every way:
Borosilicate Glass vs Pyroceram Glass
Thermal Conductivity: 1.14 W/mK vs 3.96 W/mK (3X more)
Thermal Expansion: 3.3 E-6 vs 0.30 E-6 (10X less)
Knoop hardness: 470 vs 705 (2X harder)
Knoop hardness is if you take a needle (diamond) and tried to impact the glass, how far will it go. Higher the number the less it will indent.
$20 isn't bad, and the stuff seems pretty awesome. It's sold by several other names (re-branded).
Most importantly, the stuff has wicked thermal shock abilities. It's designed to go from 100 C to 0C in a moment without cracking.
So if you end up replacing your bed under warranty or otherwise, call your local glass companies.
