Topic: Davinci 1.0A PLA

Hello,

I'm a newbie to the 3d scene, and to Davinci printers. I'm looking at using PLA filament instead of ABS because of the advantages of it. What modifications are needed to get the printer to be able to handle PLA? Do I only need to print new fan shrouds, etc? Or is there more to it?

Theoretically with the 1.0A you should be able to use at least the XYZ PLA filament.  Others have reported getting other PLA to work. 

I am in the same boat as you.  I am going to dive into some PLA soon.  Many folks have modified their printers in various ways including adding fans, changing the airflow of the case to help with PLA and the most extreme route is the replace the extruder.   I may do that at some point but want to wait a bit. 

Searches of this site and the Voltivo forums should give you lots of tips on PLA.  The 1.0A supposedly has an extruder that can work with PLA.

Personally I might buy some 3rd party PLA and just play around with the stock set-up first.  Then if needed adding some fans, etc.

The 1.0A is supposed to work with PLA as has been said. Thr 1.0 will not work without changing the extruder for their new one at 100 bucks or adding serious heat sinking and additional air flow to the existing one. Then you could just dezign and print a carriage and change to an E3D and print most any filament.

Do note PLA is not as flexible as ABS so it will break sooner under force. Has a much lower heat tolarance and because it is biodegradable it cannot be used outside or for parts in a vehicle.

Me too.
Bumat silver and gray PLA.
Unmodified stock extruder w/ frt mounted blower hot end fan, layered controlled by Cura : )
Reversed back extruder fan.
and doors open.

That said, I find ABS more workable. Easily glue pieces, stronger, sands and cuts easier.
My acetone vapor pot produces smooth models.
PLA does produce nice finer prints but very hard to rework and glue. I use an acrylic cement.
I have xacto blade cuts on my fingers from trimming PLA. ABS trims like wood.
ABS smells bad.
PLA filament if left unprotected cracks in pieces. I had a whole $30 PLA roll where the filament was in pieces.
