Topic: Solidoodle 3 Screw Specs?

Hey all, I upgraded my SD3's hotend to the E3D v6, did a few prints and it worked like a charm. I printed out a better hot end mount than the one sold in the Filastruder store but now I need longer screws to properly mount it. Does anyone know the specs for the screws used in the hot end assembly? I'm mostly concerned with the threading on the screws that go into the stepper motor. I couldn't find any resources for this online and I don't have the tools I need to measure the screws I have. I might be able to estimate it but I'd rather not waste time and money with trial and error.

While we're here, how about the screws on the other parts of the printer? I've heard there's a mix of metric/imperial throughout the thing and it seems like there's different dimensions going on. If I can help it I'd like to have all of the screws on-hand so I don't have to repeat this process with every modification I try out.

90% of screws SD uses is M3
Right carriage and idler blocks use M5
M2 for mounting the Limit Switches
M4 for bed leveling screws
Center carriage is 4-40 (I believe)
All others you can safely bet M3

Lengths will vary between applications

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on

the stock size for the hotend mount is M3 x 25mm (have mine off verifying fit of my own E3d v6 wink was easy to take a quick measurement)

the other most common M3 cap head sizes to have on hand...

M3 x 8
M3 x 10
M3 x 12
M3 x 15
M3 x 20
M3 x 35-40 (for the Y stepper motor - the ones on my SD 4 were too short @ 30mm, barely threaded in - I got some a bit longer for more secure mounting)

any hobby shop that sells RC cars & their parts should have a good selection of metric screws on hand if you cant find them at your local hardware store.

As another option, there are online retailers that sell screw kits for RC cars that will have an excellent selection of the various sizes, or you can order from places like McMaster-Carr or Fastenal. (Google is your friend)

It took me a while but I have accumulated nearly every length of M3 screw.  Just take your calipers and measure your existing screws to see how much more length you need.  In the case that I have a screw that is too long and no shorter ones on hand, I just trim it with my dremel cutting head.  I even have a stack of M3x60 screws that I got to use on the Lawsy carrige + E3D V6 mount combo.

If you do need to trim down a too long screw, as stated above, thread a couple nuts on first. After you cut it, you can back off the nuts and it will deburr the screw automatically!
