Topic: Bed not heating (SOLVED)

Some of you might remember that our Workbench always seems to have a problem getting the bed heater to kick on in the morning  when we arrive. It seems like I've tried about everything, and nothing was working. Well, I've gotten in to work overtime now and all it takes is removing the glass bed, and placing my hand on the aluminum for about 2min. My hand slowly heats up the bed, which you can watch in RH, and every time I get it to about 6C, the heater kicks on and warms normally. Strange but whatever works...

Re: Bed not heating (SOLVED)

How cold is it in your workspace?  You may want to do a PID auto tune for your bed heater.

Re: Bed not heating (SOLVED)

6C? Goodness. In my house my bed reads about 21C ambient. The MINTEMP configuration for the bed is about 3C--it's possible that you are tripping that. But that also means it's almost freezing where your workbench is!

Re: Bed not heating (SOLVED)

We have it in our basement office which has our server rack and an air conditioner running 24/7. So when i arrive it's always cold and I shut the AC off and have the printer enclosed when we use it. The plan is to have it on a wheeled cart so that it can be moved into classrooms etc... Unfortunately I'm still fine tuning it until it works well enough to release to the students.

Thanks for the help, going to run through autotune this morning!

Re: Bed not heating (SOLVED)

Auto tune will help for sure but below a certain temp your firmware is set up to protect against thermistor problems.  At such a low temp it is picking that up as a problem and not allowing the heat cycle to function.  That is why when you get it just a bit warmer it will then function normally.

Re: Bed not heating (SOLVED)

Server rooms are indeed super cold. I swear it used to feel like I was going to get frostbite working in the one at my old university. Brrr

And loud! We have a wall of Styrofoam Macbook Pro holders taped together to dampen the sound to a nice hum.

This is exactly the kind if information I was looking for, everything makes sense now. As always, expert advice. Just a thought, have you ever considered starting a business where you go to schools, events, etc... and help calibrate their printers? I bet there could be decent demand, which could only grow and 3d printing catches on faster and faster.

Re: Bed not heating (SOLVED)

Thank you
The though has crossed my mind but travel expenses would make it cost prohibitive for the customer.
