Topic: E3D V6 Lite and Press

OK, simple question. Does the E3D V6 Lite require a firmware flash to work with the SD Press?

I'm not scared of firmware flashes but I really can't be bothered with all the faffing around and international shipping to the middle east. If I could buy one thing (the E3D itself) and download the necessary STLs I'd be happy. If the firmware could be flashed with a simple USB connection I'd even be fine, but I just don't think I want to go through all the effort and hassle of compiling all the equipment that MacGyver quotes in his post for the E3D V6 (non-lite). The programmer was the final straw for me. I really want to ditch the stock hotend but just don't want to have to go through all of that.

I must admit I'm confused as to why a flash is essential. Surely a thermistor just responds to the temperature. But that's probably me being naive.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

Maybe I can offer some hope.
From a recent post by Soliryan he makes it sound as though the programer is not essential.  (bottom of the page)
http://www.soliforum.com/topic/9709/e3d … s/page/15/

The reason for the firmware is twofold.  The thermistor tables are different between the SD and E3d making your thermistor read incorrectly.  The other reason is that for proper assembly the E3d requires heating past the Max temp of your printer.
Without proper assembly your E3d experience will be short lived.  At least this was the case with the V6 and it appears as though the Lite may have some different guidelines so it is possible you may be ok without changing the "max temp" cutout.

This leaves the only variable being the thermistor type.  I do not know what type is in the stock press but if it is a type 5 than I see no reason for the firmware change.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

Thanks for all of that info Wardjr.

I had a look in the stock Press firmware, and it uses "define TEMP_SENSOR_0 1" so I'm guessing that means I'd need the programmer? If I go down this route (huge internal sigh happening this end), could you tell me exactly what I need? I know all the hardware parts as I found that list on MacGyver's thread, but for the programmer, is it just a case of buying one and nothing else, or are there specific cables or anything that are needed to flash the Press?

I'm reluctant to go through this, but the stock hotend is really starting to get on my nerves. It's having yet another acetone bath having jammed badly. Again. Can't really justify the cost of an E3D, but the Lite looks awesome.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

I ordered a V6-Lite.

From reading the installation guide: The thermistor value needs to be changed, and they also recommended changing PID_MAX to 150.  I believe that is to reduce the chance of "overshooting" the maximum temperature.  The V6-Lite has a max temperature of 245c, so lowering the Max temperature would be recommended (the press default is 300).

Don't adjust PID_MAX. there is no need for this, as PID auto tuning will reduce the amount of overshoot substantially. In my experience too low of a PID_MAX creates oscillation in temperature even with proper PID auto tuning.

Newer V6s and Lite6s ship with a 20w (edit: 25w) heater cartridge also, which doesn't overshoot as aggressively.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

Reducing PID_MAX was a safety consideration before the changeover to 25w heaters. It is less necessary now that E3D ships with 25w (not 20w) heaters. It is not about overshoot, but rather maximum temperature in the event of a sensor or firmware failure.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

I've ordered a Lite, with all the parts to mount it. I'll take pics as I do the upgrade and post a thread on my experiences. It probably won't get here for another week or so, but I'll update you with my success/failure.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

If you don't mind assembling out of order, you can do the 245C hot assembly by assembling just the metal parts (no electronics) and putting them in an oven at 475F for a while. Take it out and tighten as per instructions. I haven't tried this, but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work.

SD3 w/ RUMBA (8825s), merlin hot end (in pieces). Ender3 w/ silent board for PLA printing. Ender5 w/ silent board, e3d v6, new z lead screw, and glass bed. DiY Kossel w/ smoothieboard (in pieces). Vellman Vertex (in pieces)
Shapeoko2 router in process of being converted to laser engraver (in pieces)
Multicam 5000 series CNC Router w/ 11HP spindle, 5x10' table, and auto tool changer (in pieces)

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

OK, I've started on this and already hit a wall!

I thought before I did the hardware install, I'd look at flashing the firmware. I've got the board into boot mode, hooked up to my Mac. I'm running Arduino 1.6.4 with Teensyduino installed. I've set my board to "Teensy++ 2.0".

I thought I would keep it simple first by using a known quantity before starting to mess around, so I tried to compile the unmodded SD firmware. I get a load of warning messages, mainly centering on defined variables which are not used, most of which relate to thermal runaway protection. Gets past all that, then just stops at around 60% (the blue progress bar is just past halfway). It says it's compiling, but nothing is happening. It gets to that point within about 10-20 seconds, but then just sits there and goes no further. It doesn't crash or give an error, the progress bar just stops moving.

As I said, this is the unmodified SD Press firmware that I am trying to compile, so it should just work. But it doesn't. Any ideas anyone?

All I am trying to do is set the thermistor to type 5 and I wanted to set the max temp to 245 as well. But I'm failing dismally!

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

Just a quick guess but what board number is selected in the configuration.h of the "stock" firmware?

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

Just grab a compiled hex from someone that's done this before, like MacGyverX.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

Elmoret: Problem is that all the ones I've found are for the E3DV6 rather than the Lite. I didn't want to use that in case there were settings I wasn't aware of. Plus, I like to try and get into things so I understand them better. Plus it's cool. wink

Wardjr: I will have to check once I get home, but from memory I'm pretty sure the motherboard was set as type 81.

I had a bit of (limited) success this morning after a little more tinkering before work, so I'll take another look this afternoon. I think (not sure) that the download was somehow corrupted. I'll redownload the original firmware from Solidoodle later and start again from scratch with it. Fingers crossed.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

OK, so I got the firmware compiled at last. I have no idea exactly what went wrong but I just redownloaded everything and it worked this time. I can only guess that there was something got corrupted in the files I downloaded first time. Or I messed up! wink

So firmware is done, but you guessed it. I just cannot get the bootloader to work. I tried FLIP and BootloaderHID. All the same problem. The board is powered (2 green LEDs) and the jumper is set. I tried shorting the reset pins to try and force it to work, but nothing.

I have tried on a Mac, a Windows 7 PC, a Windows XP PC and a Windows Vista PC. All the same result. Bootloader says "Waiting for Teensylu... Hint: press reset" and Flip just says that could not open USB device.

I've got an irritating feeling that the only answer here is "buy a programmer".

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

v6 and Lite use the same thermistor, so no worries mixing hex files.

OK, thanks for letting me know. I've compiled the firmware anyway now, just can't get it onto the board. Bootloader just does not want to play. I'd guess it has to be a driver issue, but I just can't get anywhere with that. Even downloaded the 64 bit signed ones to try on the Windows 7 PC, and get exactly the same message. Think I'll just put all this back on the shelf for now and order a programmer. I'm getting nowhere fast with the bootloader.

Re: E3D V6 Lite and Press

I just got my e3d-v6lite installed (bowden setup), and so far it's great!  I did use an AVRTinyISP to load the firmware... I also couldn't get the bootloader to work.

Well done! I strongly suspect that the bootloader hasn't been installed in the early Presses. I ordered a programmer. Just waiting for it to arrive now. Takes a minimum of a week to get here.
