Topic: Just got 1.0 w/ 1.0.1 -- where do I start with these goals:

Printer just showed up. It's got the J37 jumper on the board, shows as a 1.0 with 1.0.1 firmware.

I want to run repetier, what process should I follow? I have been reading the past few days and it's still a bit unclear. This is a first printer, I guess I would be okay with stock stuff, but want to at least used third-party filament.

Thanks!

https://github.com/luc-github/Repetier- … /README.md

This a link to a readme on luc's .92 firmware, its the latest and greatest as far as custom firmware goes for davincis. I would suggest installing arduino 1.5.8 since 1.6.3 did not work for me. It is honestly a pretty easy process (15min to complete), since you seem to have cracked it open already you have surpassed a lot of peoples sticking points with custom fw. Just follow those directions and you will be fine. Even if it doesn't work the first time just jumper it and do it again. Its pretty hard to mess up.

The instructions are for people who know a bit about PCs. You will have to figure out some stuff

Thanks, I saw that link but was concerned with the unsupported J37, but I'll give it a shot!

Super easy, thanks!

Now what would you suggest as "next step"? I kinda hadn't thought past the getting/flashing part!

haha enjoy it for a while, and eventually upgrade the hardware to an e3d. A couple accessories that you may want to print:
-Bearing Holders
-Filament Spool Holder
-Bed Level adjusters
-Hole covers

Are you a college stuendt by the way? LOL Such mastery of the computer and time during the day leads me to believe you are.

Thanks! Not a student, but college-related.

I'm in the middle between "starting" and "making" -- I have the printer ready and loaded, but not calibrated and I have no software / computer interface loaded... where do I even start? Is the XYZ software okay/safe to use after changing the firmware, at least to start?

Edit: loaded Repetier Host, got a level. Just need to do a test print now...

Gotcha, yep Rep host is your hosting software. It is much better than XYZ lol. I suggest making a 20x20 test cube and messing with your slic3r settings until you get a decent print. This is the hard part for first timers. We can offer help, but since each printer is different the most we can do is get you in the ball park.

Hi bmoore,
I just got the same printer today. Did you try printing something yet with the flashed firmware? The guys in the Voltivo forum say that after flashing the firmware the z axis doesn't work. I'm thinking flashing it but first I want to make sure it works.  This is the version I have (see attached picture). Thanks in advance

You have the new board so I don't believe you can go to custom firmware yet, but I know that they are working on it.

Thanks for the info browning. I will have to wait then. I can still use different brand filament though by reseting the original cartridge with arduino right? Are you using hatchbox filament or something else? Thanks

Re: Just got 1.0 w/ 1.0.1 -- where do I start with these goals:

That's the same board I have, 1.0a, (stock firmware shows it as 1.0, I thought there would be an "a" afterwards, but there isn't), it flashed with no issues. All of the info is out there, it's just spread around. Basically, my process was:

a) Out of box, determine the it was a J37 board.
b) Jumper J37 and power on, wipes stock firmware.
c) Follow instructions Browning54213 linked to, also double-checked with video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjuCvlnpB7M
d) Verified Repetier installation and used auto-level.
e) Loaded Repetier-Host program and got stuck for a bit, then found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7ztSYTACLo This video helped a lot and got me functional.
f) Did a test print that came out very stringy. Upped the temperature and started trying to print 20mm cube. Got a couple stringy / loose prints and found I had missed some settings in Slicer.
g) Put correct setting in slicer (extruder nozzle diameter and filament thickness) and printed an awesome 20mm cube.

It's pretty easy, I hope the printer is reliable!

That's great news. Thank you very much.

You might want to try upgrading the extruder like brown said. It's sort of complicated getting some settings down to get them to work. My mk9 prints amazing quality stuff now. It can also handle higher speeds with the crazy gear it has.
