Topic: DaVinci 2.0 bad impression

Hi Forum, My name is Alex and I'm from México, this is my first post.

I have a issue with my new DaVinci 2.0,

Recently I bought a DaVinci 2.0, I've been printing different models of thingiverse and everything its cool, but I have a problem, I made a case for a circuit and when I printing I realize that, the circuit It doesnt fit on the case, because the print was smaller than the design, so I print another thing more simple, just a 10 mm cube, when I print that cube, every side has different measure. It's Seems not a cube, the base has 10 mm, but the end of the print has 9.5 mm.

Dou you have any idea of what happen?

This is normal, filament shrinks when it is printed so you have to adjust your design to account for the shrinkage in the final product. The other option is to adjust the printer to account for it by changing steps per mm in the firmware. But that is impossible with a Da Vinci and stock firmware.

This shrinkage will actually vary from spool to spool even with the same vendor. So it is always a good practice to print something like a cube with known dimensions any time you change filament and that allows you to see the shrinkage for that roll and adjust your dimensions accordingly.

The models on thingiverse do not take this into account and that is why many have the SCAD file with them so you can adjust the dimensions to suit your needs. Another thing about Thingiverse is that unless you see an image posted by someone who has actually printed the model, it may not actually be printable. Thingiverse is about 3D modeling in general and some of the designers there have no clue about the limitations of a 3D printer nor did they ever intend for their model to be printed.

THIS IS NOT A PRINTER DEFECT. It is simply the nature of the material we use.

mmm thats a shame, I had the intention of printing, diferent cases that fit o different circuits.

I Know that the material shrinks, but I realize that the shrink is different on bottom than the top,

So its normal that the top of the design has 0.5 mm less, i think this was a long difference.

.5mm is the usual amount that you would have to oversize all your designs to get them to print correct. As for a case or any design for that reason it usually takes a couple of prints to get it right. The problem with a Da Vinci is that it is locked down and the average user does not have access to the settings needed to tune it to print more precisely.

So unless you want to go through the trouble of flashing your firmware to Repetier so you can have access to the steps per mm and such you are only left with one alternative and that is to make your own models using a cad package or download models that have an scad file so you can resize them to compensate for the shrinkage factor.

When you do make your own designs you will find you will have to oversize them by .4 to .5mm most of the time.

PLA does have less shrinkage than ABS but it will still shrink and you will still need to compensate for it.
