Topic: Firmware Bomb? Dead DaVinci 2.0

Has anyone else made the same mistake I did and update firmware on their duo?  Because, on my first print after updating half way through it failed and displayed a cartridge error.  When the bed reached the bottom the whole printer shut down.  I cycled the power and now the display only lights dim and no power up.  I am running an XYZeroCart from WCTEK and have been for over 900 hours.
When I contacted XYZ (laughable) and asked them straight "did you disable my printer with your firmware?" they only replied my warranty is void for modifying it.
If you have also experience this please contact me.  I am interested in organizing a class action against XYZ.

Re: Firmware Bomb? Dead DaVinci 2.0

To my knowledge it is illegal to disable a product when reversing to the same brand/maker or firmware (i.e. from 1.2.6 to 1.1.J) as it is the same manufacturer. I do know for a fact that in most industries it is illegal to deny warranty coverage due to a modification that did not affect the broken part (this was a big deal in the car clubs a couple years back).

(And by the way everybody should block all connections of XYZWare in your firewall if you don't want this to happen to you)

It might be but being a Taiwan based company you will have a hard time taking action against them due to the Government having to be involved on both sides. It's just like all the boot legs from China and other knockoffs. Although illegal, taking action is not worth all the red tape you would have to go through.

If they where in America then you would have a chance.

Sure I would like to use other colors etc. but I can understand the quality angle...If they control what you use they can control how the product works.  If a 3rd party filiment ruins the extruder they install, you'll call XYZ and say it must be xyz's fault when maybe it was not.
I think your survey answer may be a little unfair... You have no idea if XYZ is planning to let third partys produce carts for sale at some point, just like ink printers.
Im happy with mine, only run stock software and update whenever one comes out.  Mine prints great.  I just had to send the glass bed back for replacement under warrenty, other than being hard to understand on the phone and having to email a pic vs using the support webpage everything seems fine.  A better company would have also paid for shipping back to them but ill deal.

Re: Firmware Bomb? Dead DaVinci 2.0

XYZ sells their printers cheap on purpose to make money back from filament. When bypass their filament with filament resetters they could say you botched your printer since you messed with it with a filament resetter. You have to be smarter than XYZ, and using their stock firmware is a joke and its your fault for staying on their firmware.

Re: Firmware Bomb? Dead DaVinci 2.0

I'm running stock firmware and I use a cartridge resetter. No issues here at all. You just need to dump the XYZware.

Re: Firmware Bomb? Dead DaVinci 2.0

You having a problem, and XYZ voiding your warranty for messing with their product, is not evidence of a grand conspiracy to make you buy filament.  Quit whining, because nobody cares, and it doesn't help solve your issue.

To top it all off, you were dumb enough to TELL them you modified it.  Well played.

Your printer is not dead and be easily recovered and free of XYZ for good dimply by flashing to Repetier firmware.

Re: Firmware Bomb? Dead DaVinci 2.0

I am not voting because I disagree with both options. XYZ is far from a monopoly.

XYZ uses proprietary filament because they can, just as most inkjet printers do. Just like these printers, you can get around this.
You should know that modifying a product will void your warranty.

Also, XYZ gets a lot of hate for this, when there are a number of other printers/companies that do the same thing.

In addition to this, the XYZeroCart's site clearly states that you should no update firmware, and block the XYZware from making internet connections. If this was done, then they should not have known you had modified the printer, and firmware should not have been updated.

It sucks that they 'bricked' your printer. The good news is that now you don't have to worry about voiding anything and you are free to modify and tinker till your hearts content.

Exactly, so now we all know how to get out of our warranties early. Oh wait I bought mine on ebay, I never had a warranty.

Re: Firmware Bomb? Dead DaVinci 2.0

1) Ray sorry  to here that your firmware was seemingly tampered with.
2) calling XYZ co criminal and greedy may be an overstatement. I expect you knew there business model is the sell printers at a low margin and make the profit on  the  consumables ie filament. In all fairness this business model had been used for years by Hewet Packard , Stratasys and 3D Systems. Part of the reason for print cartridges is to make profit. But other  reasons include protecting the quality of the filament by using desiccant in the cartridge . And insuring the quality of the filament through thorough quality control. You can not control the quality of someone else's product.
3) the whole no user serviceable parts, warranty void is seal is broken is nothing new.  This statement only works if the manufacture has a real  service program.  From what I have seen  the only recourse of warranty service from most 3D printer companies is send it back for an exchange.

4) I went the e-bay used rout for purchasing my printer. I knew there was no warranty  .  The issues I had were no worse than the new ones discussed here.
