Topic: Extruder making noise on retraction

Hi,
on my Da Vinci 1.0, every retraction the extruder makes create a click sound. My idler gear seems a bit loose but dang, the machine only have less than 150 hours. Could it be the idler gear ? I checked the voltivo thread about the pulling lever but it does not seems to be my lever.

the print comes off great so I doubt it's the temperature. I am using XYZ's filament.

Any idea ?

Thanks

Of the three printers i have had, they always make a click or different sound on retractions. Unless it affecting your prints I would not be too concerned.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

ok thank you. Did yours made that click noise since you got them or after some hours ?
Mine just started lately to make that noise.

You could check the grub screw on the motor gear and make sure it is tight. Other than not sute of another source. Mine did it it from day one. But the extruders where geared where this is direct.

On the brass gear that actually pushes the filament there is a hole inless it is pressed on. In that hole there is a set screw that tequires a hex key. If the shaft has a flat side like most and the screw is loose then the gear will bump the edges of the flat each time the direction changes. yhat could be the clicks. My extruder up until now was geared so the click was the gears temeshing with each direction change.

There is no set screw on the stock Da Vinci exturder so it isn't that. The gear is actually pressed on.

Re: Extruder making noise on retraction

Hi,
The joined image shows what I have.
These 4 screws were not completely tight but I just tightened them. However, the idler gear is quite loose.
Is it normal, could it be the case for the clicking noise on filament retraction ?

As for the brass gear, I see no hex screw. Like browning said, it is pressed on.

Thanks

Re: Extruder making noise on retraction

I've discovered that the idler wheel inside the extruder will also creak. You have to take the extruder off, pop off the retainer clip, clean it, grease it, and then put it back together. Nice and quiet again.

Re: Extruder making noise on retraction

As weird as it sounds, the cracking sound disappeared by itself. It was cracking with different filaments for a while but stopped. If it starts to do it again, I'll check out your suggestion.
Thanks.
