Topic: Building my own printer

I've been frustrated with my solidoodle and been looking at maybe building my own printer.

I do have a peachy printer on order but that seems months away and i've been considering what to do when i get it. I have plans for alter

But I've been looking at the tantillus. My first question is has anyone built one?

http://reprap.org/wiki/Tantillus

it looks like they have changed the design for lasercut parts and while cool i don't have access to the files

Now what i'd love to do is to build an sla printer but i really need more experience i think with 3d printers  my thoughts eventually are combining a Tantalus casing with an sla printer and the projector or laser at the top with a vatat the bottom. but i can for see problems with that as the print plate would be lowered into the resin.

sorry i may be rambling

but i've looked at the videos available on you tube and not foudn to many so has anyone made one?

Re: Building my own printer

Sublime (forums.reprap.org) is the designer of the Tantillus.  He's still active on that forum and is a really nice guy.  He did a group Tantillus build at the local hackspace with a bunch of people some years back.  All of the machines I've seen produce really nice quality prints and the machine itself is quite small.  I've wanted to build one for some time now myself.  Post on the reprap forum and I bet he will reply.

Cool design, but I would think that if you are going to the trouble to build your own printer you might as well do it with a build area larger than 100x100mm.  IMO, you will outgrow that pretty quickly.  I can't tell if it has a heated bed or not.

This is more for me to learn on and i will probably give this as a Christmas peasant to my niece. She has been invited to the citadel for a summer engineering program. Very excited for her

My thinking is this will give me an opportunity to learn some about printers and their design and construction while also allowing me to provide her a pretty cool gift.

Cool, I bet she would really like that.  Check out my thread over in projects to see my build of a big printer.
