Topic: Should the extruder slightly squash the layers?

I just printed a piece to mount a dial indicator for easy bed leveling, I was able to level the bed perfectly. I used to use the index card method and wanted to give this dial indicator a try. Thing is while printing its squashing the first layer slightly, is it supposed to do that?

The first layer should be squished to about half of your desired layer height. Each layer after that should have very slight squish as well.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Squishing is good. It pushes the filament into the bed giving better adhesion.

Yep in fact the profile of the nozzle is even designed to give some squish.
