Topic: Filament not extruding E3D

I have my E3D setup, however I am not getting filament to properly extrude. When I use the load filament, it works and it properly extrudes the filament. Now, when starting a print, the test strip barely comes out of the extruder, then almost stops feeding entirely. I do see the drive wheel turning, and if you gently push the filament it comes out. What settings would need adjusting, as the filament doesn't seem to be slipping and the drive wheel is clean.

Your bed is too high. Lower it just about the thickness of paper. Or do the manual calibration that is a sticky in this section.

No it's not, I have verified this twice now.

If you are going by the machine saying pass on the autocalibration then you may want to read the sticky on manual leveling. The values the machine wants are wrong as they should be based on the desired layer thickness and not dome golden number.

The auto method also does not account  for a warped or bowed bed like so many of these printers have. Most of them the middle of the bed is higher or lower than the edges.

If it extrudes when not over the bed and partially extrudes the purge line yhen the bed height is the only thing it can be unless you have a bad heater connector like so many of these also have and it causes the heater to cool once the head gets over the print area.

No, I am using the paper method. Haven't used since installing repetier.

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

If the drive is turning but the filament isn't being sucked down then either your idler wheel is not pushing against the wheel or (most likely) your hot-end is jammed.

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

I have mine set up on a bowden feed setup and works fine any chance of a photo of how you have it set up??

Surely you joke, an E3D getting a jam?

He never said if it was clicking or not. If it is jammed then it would click as the gear slips. He also said if he pushes it does feed. Also rules out a jam.

I would make sure the head is assembled and the motor assembly is snapped in to the carriage correctly. Make sure the spring that pulls the idler wheel is attached and it touches the feed gear with some force when there is no filament loaded. It sounds to me the idler is not pushing the filament against the motor gear.

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

Those flimsy levers can bend and hang up  holding the idler away.. Had that happen a few times,, after doing a routine head cleaning..

I was thinking the same Carl I have never herd of a E3d jamming yet and dont think we ever will there amazing for the cost definitely worth it...

As carl said may be to do with your actual feed set up rather than the E3D itself matey

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

The plate that has the lever arm on it bent. That made the idler wheel be out of alignment and the filament was being pushed on the smooth side, not against the teeth. Seems to be working now.

Post the settings what you are using at the moment and your set up of the machine mate and we can get a pic of whats going on

*Used a .4 layer height for this print however

I am using this carriage mod: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:707530

Printed with XYZ White Filament (last of this crap luckily).

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

Try raising your extruder temp to 215 0r even 220. White usually requires the higher if not highest temp to print and it looks to me the extrusion is relatively cold so to speak.

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

How big is it?

If its smallish then run @ 220  and bed @90

If its large I run it @ 230-240 and bed @85

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

How do I change the z Offset? I use the manual levelling tool and get the bed as perceft as I can, then when printing, the nozzle is higher than when using the tool and the plastic is then not adhering to the bed. The Increase in temp did help, but it still is not printing correctly.

The Z offset is under printer settings in Slic3r. Just set it for a value you think it needs to be to close the gap. Since the bed moves down I believe it should be a positive value. Just stand by the power switch in case you get it wrong and the nozzle does not dig in to the glass.

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

The E3D is working pretty good now, but what is causing this in the corners? The taper inwards then flatten back out.

Excessive heat. Lower your bed temp and/or use a fan for small pieces like that, or print multiple pieces simultaneously.

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

Just a quick question to anyone else with a E3D, what are your retraction settings? I haven't found a good spot as I either get too much or too little.

Re: Filament not extruding E3D

Perhaps this will help a little. A 40 min presentation and some settings of the E3D hot ends.
