Re: XYZ filament troubles

Carl, I don't plan on buying any more.

I have a number of carts right now with various amounts of filament left that are already bought and paid for.

I'm simply going to break out the spools so I can get rid of the cartridge boxes themselves.

Re: XYZ filament troubles

Honestly I like the neatness of the carts. I tried to refill one but it was a royal pain and a huge waste of two hours I will never get back. So I just keep a spool sitting on rollers on a shelf just above the printer.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Anycubic Predator, massive Delta machine. 450 x 370 print envelope.

Re: XYZ filament troubles

I tried to respool the black reel I bought last week into an empty XYZ spool (because I read that you did it!) and gave up pretty quickly. An exercise in futility. That's when I went ahead and printed the hanger and guide.

I like the convenience of the cartridges too but the lack of XYZ stock drove me to explore this option.

I already love the fact that the spool of Inland I got at Microcenter last week was $14 for a Kg!

Re: XYZ filament troubles

Here is what you do to make your life easier: (and cheaper)

Purchase the XYZerocart.  Install it and forget about using carts ever again.
Print a spool holder to use. (Theres hundreds of them on Thingverse)
Purchase quality filament from a reputable source (NO EBAY OR AMAZON)
Install on spool and set your spool behind the machine, about 2 feet from the machine. (The slack is needed to keep the spool from arbitrarily unwinding itself)
Purchase Simplify3D software to control your davinci. (throw away the xyzware)

No go print all you like and have fun.

How is Simplify3D compared to Slic3r or Cura?  Do you have control over the temperatures and layer options?
I tried the modded XYZopen and calibrating it was a royal pain and ended up going back to the stock XYZware.

Or to save money.  Flash with Repetier

Re: XYZ filament troubles

I haven't used the other slicers but Simplify3d is fully featured.

Having said that, you can only take advantage of the extra controls and tweaks if you have custom (non-xyz) firmware from what I understand.

Re: XYZ filament troubles

If you use any third party filament you can get good results it just takes time and messing with the temps and speeds to get it spot on. I found the the XYZ filament it didn't like it when you went up or past 230 degrees. It's all down to preference but XYZ have made it so it will work with their locked down machine unless you set up to print from SD card ive found you can almost half print time by using e3d head and third party filament. Also you don't have to mess around changing them often as I use1kg spools
