Topic: XYZ filament troubles

Hey all!

Im a new owner of the DaVinci 1.0.  I am really enjoying it and have been familiarizing myself with it over the past week and a half and have printed some cool stuff.
Im almost out of the white starter filament, so I ordered some of the proprietary green XYZ filament from amazon.  I have yet to have a successful print with the new cartridge.

When I first opened the cartridge to install it, it seemed slightly difficult to pull the filament out, but figured it was due to the full spool.  Half way through a print the filament jams (apparently) and the print arms continue to spin, slipping the belt and making a terrible shaking noise.  It only lasted for a second before I killed the power and freed the filament.
I tested the printer out with the white filament and it works fine - a relief.

I started another print with the green filament, but this time pulled out some slack and kept my eye on the print.  Approx 75% into the print, the printer stops abruptly (no jamming) and displays 'cartridge error - canceling print', in which it sat there for over 5 minutes with the extruder still over the print.  Once I powered off/on the extruder moved back to start.
I opened the cartridge and reseated the filament in the housing but didnt seem to change much.

The little bit of printing I was able to do with the green was not good; it had issues with not sticking to the plate and slow extruding compared to the white.

I figured the filament would be the same as the starter, being I had good luck with it.
Any suggestions?

I had almost the same issues with a green and a blue cartridge. I did the same and took them apart and it also did not seem to help. I found the cartridge error seemed to be from the head pulling hard and unseating the cartridge from the contacts. My green cartridge seemed to start working better and I have had no print quality issues with it besides the feeding issue in the beginning. The blue cartridge is still sitting there and I haven't tried it since it gave me a cartridge error about 2 hours into a print. Oh and mine where also purchased from amazon.

Their print cartridges have a plug that has to be removed before installing the cartridge. If you didn't remove the plug, that is the cause of your problem. Take out the cartridge and double check to make sure you removed the plug. It's a black rubbery plug and the note to remove it is in fine black lettering molded into the case. It's not hard to spot if you remember to look for it, but real easy to miss if you forget to check.

I dont know about DoubleA but mine had the plug removed and it was still having issues.

Thank you for the responses.

The plug was the first thing removed, it actually popped off as I took it out of the box.
By the sounds of it, the spool is too heavy in the cartridge brand new, causing it to bind or stick.  My white stater filament has no problems feeding and has been my 'control' for testing.
I ordered a resetter chip the other night so I my plan is to take the green spool out of the cartridge, chip my white starter cartridge and have my green filament feed in from an external spool, to see if the cartridge is making it stick.

Hi same problem here. I Just got the 1.0 XYZ and just put my first new spool of filament in after the it say filament low even though I know it still has 35.m left on it. The new filament I bought from amazon (white) will not pull out of the cartridge unless I pull super super hard. Thinking I will just take the spool out of the new cartridge and put it on a spool holder printed from thingiverse. And just put the empty cartridge shell shell in the xyz machine so it can read the chip.  What you guys think?  I new to 3d printing just got the machine last week.
What are your thoughts on the filament chip resetter I have seen online?
Just scared to get the resetter and have to do something to the software to make it work.
Anyone have any experience with the resetter?

Sorry I just saw the post above mine. please disregard my post. It is basically the same.
what software do you guys recomend to use for the machine. I am trying sketchup but seems to keep locking up when trying to import stl files. Not sure why?

I installed my troublesome green XYZ cartridge in the machine and have a different, 3rd party, spool of filament feed in from the outside, on an external spool.  First print went well without any cartridge error issues, so with the first test, Im inclined to say its the weight of the spool in the cartridge.  Ill do some more testing.

Interesting. I figured the plug was worth mentioning, but if you already have that covered, that pretty much leaves the filament cartridge as defective.

Quality control isn't exactly XYZPrinting's strong suit.

The cases are fairly easy to open. It might be worth trying to pop it open to see if anything is snarled that may be unsnarled.

Same problem here and the answer from xyz-support:

We have sold lots of filament and no one has had problems with the filament. So your situation is like a “exception to the rule”.

As I had to print an external holder to use the filament, why shouldn't I use cheaper filament now? smile

I have flashed my machine so i know longer have to use the cartridges of filament.....I have a new Pro version cartridge reseter i will give someone a deal on if you want to keep the stock setup.....You can change things like bed temp, head temp , abs / pla and a few other variables...

I would love to flash mine but last I heard the 2.0 was not supported for the second extruder. I want to be able to use other materials and have more control over the machine.

i wonder if the cartridge resetter works with the 2.0? You can manipulate the machine pretty well with it if you can.....just reset your internal cartidges and run off spools from the outside....

Well I could give the resetter a try i guess. Shouldn't harm the printer if it don't work right? It just wont work with the reset cartridge right? And while we are on the subject mikenmel08 how much would you want for your resetter?

Im back after some testing.
I got my resetter (v2)  this past weekend and its been great.  Only used it once, but 2 seconds and the cartridge was reset.  I believe mine is simply a resetter; no heating options.
I used it to reset my empty white starter cartridge and have it in the printer.  I printed an external rear feed spool holder that has my green XYZ spool (removed from the cartridge) feeding in between the lid and case.  Makes it easy to switch to my other filaments.
I have not had any issues with the spool feeding or the X/Y arms not being able to pull the filament, pretty smooth operation so far.

Only issue I have been running into is some 'no cartridge' type errors.  My guess is that is due to the empty cartridge not having the weight of the filament to make the 3 pin connection.  I folded some heavy card stock to put under the white cartridge locker to help push cartridge onto the pins.  Ill see how it goes.

Good to hear you got things working DoubleA. I just wonder if anyone has used a resetter on a 2.0. I have the J firmware and it is my understanding that resetters dose not work with this version. And as far as I know you cant use any other version of firmware on the 2.0. Has anyone been able to get a resetter to work on a 2.0?

I have the 1.0.....When i bought it , it already had the J firmware on it and my resetter worked fine....

Resurrecting an old thread but it seems no one has discussed the probability that the hole the filament leaves the cartridge from is too small.

I had this issue a few weeks ago with a brand-new red cart. About five minutes into the print, the filament stopped dead and the machine strained to keep pulling it out. Too bad there is no "emergency" stop on a print when this much pull resistance is encountered by the extruder assembly.

I cancelled the print and removed the cart to find that the filament was stuck in the hole and wouldn't flow freely. 

I fixed the issue by opening the cart and enlarging the hole with a small circular file. When I get new carts now, the first thing I do is pull on the filament to make sure it flows without restriction.

The last thing I want is to break my machine because of a shitty cartridge.

I'm on the verge of eliminating carts altogether once I take delivery of my shiny new cart resetter. Right now, I'm running a large black spool that's hanging on the back of my machine. I'm bypassing the DRM with a full purple cart in the bay for now.

It's working quite well and I'm pretty happy not to have to deal with the XYZ clowns any longer.

Awesome machine, pretty terrible service.

Now that I have a resetter, I have avoided using the cartridges all together because of the issue you mention.  I built a simple PVC pipe spool holder that sits on top of my printer that I can have 5 or so spools ready to go.  The filament feeds in through the center opening on the printer lid.
I leave a cartridge in the machine so I can use the resetter.  When I get new XYZ filament, I remove the spool from the cartridge and put it on my PVC rig.  In my opinion, it is much easier to access the filament this way.  It is also easier to monitor whats going on and reduces drag on the moving parts while printing.

This is my first and only printer..so far, and I love it.  I understand why people shy away from this line of printers with the proprietary filament but with a resetter, there are no issues I have run into yet.

You won't regret it, it makes switching filament very quick and easy.  I've uploaded a picture of my super-fancy-high-tech spool holder (/sarcasm).  I put some silicone caulking on the underneath side so it wouldn't slide or rattle around.  I also cut some simple U-shaped cardboard dividers from the box they were shipped in, to sandwich the spool in-use to avoid the filament jumping off the spool or getting caught on anything.  Works great.

Only thing I've noticed is if you load too many new spools on the rig, it can be quite heavy and slightly offset your bed leveling, but that can be negligible.

I am confused. If you have a resetter why in the heavens name would you continue to buy XYZ over priced filament? I trust you realize their filament is twice the price of any other brand? The purpose for the resetter is so you can buy filament for other suppliers.

Here is the math. On average a spool from some other vendor is about 30 bucks. Give or take 10. On that spool you get 1000g or 1Kg. With XYZ you pay 25 to 30 bucks but you only get 600g per cartridge. So XYZ is double the other guys because you only get half of what the other guys give you for the same price. Plus it is near impossible to find black now from XYZ and stores are saying months before stock arrives.

There are a few on Thingiverse, I may just print one or get a wire caddy at Home Depot...

You do make a valid point about cost effectiveness.   I only have 3 non-XYZ spools that I use, however in my *short* experience with my 1.0, XYZ filament seems to gives the best printing results.
I am using stock settings and XYZware for printing.  Eventually when I get into modding or using Slic3r/Cura, where I can control the bed and extruder temperatures, I will certainly be looking into other brands of filament.  Other brands/websites Ive looked at had great reviews and good selection, but required more specific temperature ranges.  My assumption is that proprietary XYZ filament is geared more towards the 210' extruder and 90' bed temperatures, but I could be wrong.
