Topic: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

So I have sort of a stupid question that I cannot seem to find an answer to.

With Simplify 3D does it upload to your Da Vinci's SD card w/ stock firmware when you print or is sending code to your printer or both?

In other words do I need to leave my PC running while it prints?

Thanks

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

Hi,

After version 2.2.0 Simplify3D you are able to use stock Da Vinci 1.0 and Duo to print from the SD card (only with repetier firmware) and while connected, if you unplug the USB cable the machine will not receive the code and fail the print.

It is different as with the XYZware because what it does is that it loads the code to the machine's SD card, then it prints it.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

You don't need to have the computer connected for the duration of the print. I use S3D to send the print to the printer and then disconnect it.  Once the print is fully loaded it goes on its own.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

Once the print is sent I usually shut Simplify3d down or set it up for my next print.

Most of the time, my computer is asleep while the print is ongoing.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

Thanks for the replies.  It seems there is a difference of opinion.  My machine is stock (no repetier).  It seems to upload to the machine ok.  When I print over USB I see Simplify3D giving real time feedback.

So am I safe in turning my computer off once the printer starts?

You know you could just start a garbage print and unplug it. That would remove all speculation and mixed opinions.

If it is showing real time data then that means SD3 is talking to the printer in real time over USB so you would not be able to unplug it.

True enough.  Perhaps I will.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

As someone who has a DaVinci 1.0 connected to my computer through USB and who has been using Simplify3d for quite a while now, I can assure you that once the print job is sent to the printer, you are good to disconnect.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

I have SD3 and yes you can unplug once the print job is sent you can disconnect from the printer.

Same here.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

Do you just clicked the usb print.  How do you know when the print job is sent?  Mine just gives me real time info the whole time.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

On my printer my screen tells me and also when you click USB print you can also click settings and you will see the gcode going through in communication

I believe you, honest.  smile

I just purchased it and I am figuring some things out with it.  So far I am impressed by the program.  It does appear to upload to the printer like XYZware.  Since I am on stock with stock firmware I was not sure what you had, so some doubt crept in.  I think the feedback I was receiving was just the current stats like temp, etc.

I do have a follow-up question about shell thickness in Simplifiy3D.  I am at work so I don't have it right in front of me, but what would be the corresponding numbers in Simplify3D to the shell thickness settings in XYZware?  I think, if I can recall, the default number for me was 2 in Simplify3D.

Thanks

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

I get my best results with shells set at two. If I'm making something big, such as a vase, then I will use three.

I've found that one shell is way too thin however. XYZware's settings are pretty ambiguous, I think their "medium" setting is pretty close to three shells.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

Yeah, that makes sense.  I just wanted to get some kind of gauge with Simplify3D since XYZware is the only other software I have used with this printer.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

Correlation between XYZware and Simplify3D  and  some improvements:
(The correlation came from reading gcode and looking at the settings in user panel)

Before I get to the point, here's a tip:  Large files can hang up on uploading - to help fix this, do the following:
Go to Tool>Firmware Config>Communication
  Increase the cache size (had to set mine to 2047 (1 less than 2048) and set the Timeout to 60 sec.

XYZware has three major print settings:  Normal, Good and Excellent
In Simplify3D, select the Da Vinci 1 process and modify the defaults to match XYZware, as follows:

For Normal
  Density = 5%  (means the same as infill)
  Height = 0.4
  Layers = 2  (this applies to both Top and Bottom)
  Shell = 1
  Bed Temp = 90
  Extruder Temp = 215
  Speed = as is

For Good
  Density = 5%
  Height = 0.3
  Layers = 2
  Shell = 2
  Bed Temp = 90
  Extruder Temp = 215
  Speed = as is

For Excellent
  Density = 10%
  Height = 0.2
  Layers = 3
  Shell = 3
  Bed Temp = 90
  Extruder Temp = 215
  Speed = as is

Improvements to the above settings:
Simplify3D enables setting several parameters that improve the print but, the values depend on the model you’re printing - one size doesn’t fit all, so to speak.
Density can always improve the structural integrity (hold off increasing until you're happy with everything else about the print).
Layers and shells - depends on the model (things like thickness and corner radius and logo’s, text…).
Outline overlap, solid layer at every #layers (really helps structural integrity).

Consider some test parts such as creating something like a coin with image and text, thin and thick wall parts, have some overhangs at 45 deg, 55 deg  - some parts won't droop, some will - it's mostly about experiment and features on your model.

Currently Black ABS (XYZprint brand) is difficult to buy so I'm using Shaxon with a Zerocart (to trick the printer).  Had to increase the Extruder Temp to 220 for better print with Shaxon.

Re: Simplify3D and the Da Vinci

Thanks Galaxy99.  That was a good post to give me some better references.  Of course you are absolutely correct about testing and tailoring your settings to specific needs.  I also have a XYZerocart.  I had been using Hatch ABS with it and it seems to work ok.  Do you like Shaxon a lot?  Ever use Hatch?
