Topic: E3D style extruder that fits the stock mount with little modification

I believe I can make an E3D extruder fit the da vinci's extruder holder.  There are just three modifications.

1. You would have to remove or relocate the circuit board. (I am reverse engineering it now for options)
2. You would have to replace the piece of aluminum that the extruder is bolted to.
3. You would have to convert your printer to a bowden assembely.

To replace the piece of aluminum I was looking at getting a 5/8 square stock and cutting it to length and then tapping the center with a m7 thread and literally screwing the throat into the mount, so it is the same length as the stock configuration.   Then I would screw the heat-sink onto the extra throat sticking out.

I would need

1. bar of 5/8 aluminum 1 foot long (cut to proper length bought of amazon)
2. a throat that is 5/8 longer  (Buy a long one on ebay and cut to length)
3. m7 tap and a m3 tap (m7 tap for the extruder and m3 tap for the 4 mounting bolts)
4. a bowden extruder setup. ( this would mostly use stock parts)

Benefits

1. I can use the da vinci's existing quick mounts to easily remove the extruder to unclog or change nozzles.
2. I do not have to permanently modify anything.
3. I do not have to raise or lower my carriage or print head and do not lose any build volume.

What do you think?

Its been done already with just three printed parts. Look through the section, info has been posted. Also unless you are keeping the stock heat block and/or thermistor, you won't need the little circuit board. Also note that this has been done with the stock direct drive. No need for bowden which will require extra changes in your slicer. Like retraction.

If you go with bowden and not the stock motor and gear then you will also have to change your firmware to Repetier .92 as you will need to modify your e-steps to get proper extrusion volume.

Re: E3D style extruder that fits the stock mount with little modification

I have only found two comparable mount types and one uses the extruders carriage but hangs the new extruder lower by about 30mm. Thing # 680959 Con is lost build volume and the potential to ram your build plate into your extruder/ floor.

The other mount you have to replace the whole carriage. Thing # 594392  Con is you lose the ability to quickly remove your extruder.

I have seen a few other files for extruder mounts but they are very similar to these two and have the same pros and cons.

Re: E3D style extruder that fits the stock mount with little modification

That thread was posted almost a month ago and doesn't state how he modified it, what supplies were used, or the STLs.  It also seems to eliminated the cooling fan and bolted the extruder to the carriage so the extruder is not easily removed.

I change nozzles frequently for different sizes and a removable extruder is very important.

I would like to have a thread that develops into a full write up, keep my cooling fan, and keeps my extruder easily removable.

I'm working on one of the carriages now.  You will regain the 30mm and the carriage also splits into two parts so it can be easily taken out when needed.  I'm still testing ....... Work in progress

Da Vinci  AiO with firmware 1.1.1 using xyzscan 1.1.18
E3Dv6 hotend with custom carriage with Borosilicate glass bed
123D Design and Simplify3D, Replaced PS with a Solidgear Flex320
Zerokart resetter,  Installed a Extruder Controller for higher temps

Kevin Would you be willing to tell me how you plan to do this?  I  just ordered everything to start my design but your idea might be more efficient.

Re: E3D style extruder that fits the stock mount with little modification

I have the  carriage made ....... Well one half of the carriage made already.  I can't make the the second half because I destroyed my stock extruder so right now I'm waiting for part to build another extruder.

Re: E3D style extruder that fits the stock mount with little modification

FYI, thing:680959 (or my remix thing:707530) does NOT cause any loss in build volume. It's designed so that the nozzle hovers at the exact same height as the stock one. And while it's not a quick release solution (i.e. not as quick as the stock extruder) it doesn't take long to unscrew two screws either big_smile

But dude, your plan doesn't exactly qualify as 'little modification', or does it? smile Anyway, good luck!

Re: E3D style extruder that fits the stock mount with little modification

Anyone ever thought about this one? thing:594392

If you buy bearings from E3D to fit 8mm rod you will also have to drill the holes out to 15mm

Thats the one I will be using just waiting for 15mm drill so I can drill out by hand then will put a post up
