Topic: Forum censorship ??

I was just trolling the forums tonight and I noticed that a certain topic was missing.

The topic in question was the one about the E3D clone.  While I personally wasn't planning on posting any further comments on it, it was nevertheless a topic that brought forth quite a few "spirited" arguments and while some of us agreed to disagree, I don't see a reason to have it so unceremoniously removed.

Why was it removed?  Did it offend anyone?  Did someone lobby to have it removed?

I didn't realize these forums were subject to subjective censorship.

I'd like to hear the reasons for removing this or any other similar topic.  I can understand removing truly objectionable offensive and or downright illegal material, but this?

Re: Forum censorship ??

by me the OP as it was doing a dis-service to the forum more than anything. of the 50 replys not one had any merit to answer my OP question. may as well have asked my dog. at least he wouldnt have changed the subject and started promoting his  bones, toys, hate of Squirrels or how he prefers canned dog food to dry made in China.

Re: Forum censorship ??

I have seen many more Topics that need cleaned out as they too just add clutter to the site. making it even harder to search for real help and not childish arguments or rambling on for weeks about an issue thats been solved as best as possible just not to somebody's satisfaction or expectation of a under $1,000 3D printer or just to see their Topic in "active" list for weeks like its a top 40 record.

Re: Forum censorship ??

Fair enough, I understand the frustration.  I will then remove this topic after you read this.

Re: Forum censorship ??

pirvan, I think it is probably pertinent to keep in mind that while these are public forums, they are entirely within their right to censor this board as they see fit. I understand that in this situation the OP of that post did remove the original topic, however even if it wasn't, if a topic is not generating relevant conversation and is only serving to fuel flame wars, I see no issue with its removal from these forums. Freedom of speech does not apply here, or anywhere on the internet for that matter, especially when you're using a free service.

Re: Forum censorship ??

Usually topics are closed to prevent any further posts, they're not just deleted.

An entire thread on a topic (good, bad or indifferent), that simply disappears overnight will definitely prompt questions or suspicions in people's minds, especially those that posted in it.

But It doesn't look like that is possible here.  You can just delete the topic.  Maybe the moderators can close it without deleting it, but I can't find a way.

Really....  I don't know where you get your ideas, but the whole point of the internet, its very underpinning, is based on the freedom of speech

Re: Forum censorship ??

A few notes:

Moderators here do not censor or delete posts, with the exception of obvious spam (and even that usually gets a warning first).
Moderators do close posts that are unproductive.

Finally, iDeNoh is correct, this is a privately owned forum and it would be well within the rights of the moderation and site owner to censor/edit/delete posts (though again, they do not). The internet is public, but individual sites are private. If you want to make a website, you can certainly say anything you like - you have free speech. If you own a website, you can edit the contents as you see fit.

Also:
This has nothing to do with a Solidoodle, so it was posted it in the wrong place.
It is interesting that you offered to delete this post, but criticized n2ri for doing so.

Re: Forum censorship ??

The only reason I offered to close it is to prevent any further posts regarding the subject, since the OP said he closed it himself.  However, I wish there was a way to close a topic, rather than delete it.

Yes I can understand deleting spam, pornography, and otherwise objectionable content, but conversations that had gotten some traction, shouldn't be deleted, just closed.

Anyway, just my 2 cents on the subject.

OH, yes:
The internet is public, but individual sites are private.

@ Moderators:  Please close this topic.

Re: Forum censorship ??

clutter on a site takes up limited memory for the entire site and much more with pictures so deleting it frees up space. that is what costs site owners more
