Topic: ABS, cant print smooth

Hello,

I have a CTC 3D printer that i got recently. I have printed with PLA perfectly and ran through 1kg of material with no issues.
I recently switched to ABS because i wanted to try it. I bought a color sample pack on amazon and i cant get the material to print correctly. My print head is as leveled as i can get it. I leveled it with an index card. I can get the first layer to stick well enough now, but my main issue is from one layer to the next it seems to be adding too much material form one layer to the next. The error get worse from layer to layer. I have played around with all the proftweaks parameters and no matter what i do nothing works.
I am at a loss, i dont know what to do.
I dont know if this makes a difference but i noticed that the sample pack was for 3d pens. i dont know if that makes a difference.

Looks fairly normal for me as ABS goes.

Maybe I to am a victim of over extrusion.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Its a little difficult to see in the picture, but here is another picture of a finished print.
You can see the surface finish is very rough because the issue becomes greater from one layer to the next that the print head runs through the previous layer. I have seen ABS with very nice finish without acetone smoothing.

It looks like overextrusion.  Did you measure the diameter of the new filament and change it in your slicer settings?  Also you might need to change the feedstock multiplier.  After you have entered the new (measured) filament diameter, print a cube with 1 perimeter, 0 infill, 0 top layers.  When it's done, make sure the thickness of the walls matches the extrusion width (I think it's Layer Width in your settings).  If the measured wall thickness needs to be reduced by 10% to hit .4mm, reduce the feedstock multiplier by 10%.

Great. Thanks. I will try that later tonight. For some reason on maker ware it's called feedstock multiplier but it's actually a divider. The higher the number the less material. Thanks again I will update later tonight.

This made all the difference. I do find it strange that i had to put the value at 1.2 which is rather high. I have always seen PLA to be .97 and abs to be .85 from videos online. Thank you very much for the help. The print came out beautiful, smooth and clean layers. I was about to give up on this filament.

Maybe your extrusion width is too low. I think 0.4mm is good.
And I think the layer height could be 0.3mm.

Also, you should check the distance between hot end and hot bed, 0.1 mm is a proper distance.

ABS also Shrinks and warps, I jacked my bed temp to 105. Layers are still shifting a little, but I think that's because the Solidoodle Press is a little more than wobbly. it's top heavy and the whole printer shakes when doing infillls.
