Topic: Feeding printer filament from other Locations?

I want to get rid of the spool holder that sticks off the back of my SD2 and move all my filament to a location under my desk.  The filament would then feed up from under my desk to the back of the SD and into the extruder. The idea is to keep the spools from hanging off the back of my desk (cleaner look/more room).

Does anyone see any problems with doing this? or has anyone tried something similar?

I would think that'd be fine, as long as the drag on the filament wasn't drastically increased. The only problem is that the Y-axis motors could skip steps if they have to pull too hard. You could remedy that by using a PTFE tube between the extruder and the back of the SD.

Look around Thingiverse.  I've seen files for under desk setups with grommets to feed filament through and clips to hold the ends where you can reach them.

Re: Feeding printer filament from other Locations?

I was thinking about running the PTFE tube all the way from under my desk to at least the back of the SD.  I just cant decide if this will be a hassle in the long run.  My original idea was to have 6 spools of filament mounted under my desk feeding to one opening.  At that point they would run to a junction/holder similar to this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:19843 where I could simply grab whatever filament I needed and load it into the machine.

I will have to play around with what works.  I don't want the Y-axis skipping though.

Re: Feeding printer filament from other Locations?

So I went ahead and gave this a try.  Seems to work just fine.  It takes a little bit more effort to pull the filament but it is printing just fine.

Oh wow I thought this was for cables, its specifically for filaments I see.  Is it okay to have your filament just out and about like that? I've been wrapping mine back up in the plastic bags that they come in with the desiccant.

Colorado=very dry

If the humidity during the winter hit above 20% in my office it would be a miracle.

Re: Feeding printer filament from other Locations?

Update:

I have refined the PVC pipe mount for under my desk.  You can now print one of your very own!

On a well calibrated printer it should fit the pipe snug enough to hold it in place. Its a much better fit than the one on the back of the Solidoodle.

Slic3r suggested print settings:
.3mm layers
4 perimeters min
3 top/ 3 bottom
use 50% infill

HA, that is an airlock. I have about 30 gallons of aging lambics in rotation. Some of them are in 1 gallon carboys, some of which I keep at work (warmer temperature).
