This seems awesome! Anyone done it?
I've used a couple larger units, 40-60 watts. I figure 2.8 watts could still etch material with the cermark metal spray. Not sure what kind of materials it could "cut" im assuming cardboard, sheet stock, vinyl, rubber, etc? Would it do thin plastic?
what file type is used? svg? I cant get Slic3r to convert stl to svg like for resin printers either.. and this mod kit casts more than the resin 3D printer I was looking into, plus looks like it makes normal use of the printer inoperative after. I would rather have what I bought to make the thousands of things I have files for than just laser cutting a few things. and save the hundreds of dollars to buy another FDM printer maybe.
cant a laser cutter be bought for same price as this kit plus a Solidoodle printer? geez!
You could pickup a cheaper Chinese laser off ebay for $500-$900 but good luck with reliability and learning another control. Of course those have more power, but if you can add laser functionality to the solidoodle it would make it a much better tool in my opinion.

This kit utilizes the fan plug header and still allows you to use your 3d printer. They provide free software to take an image from inkscape and convert it into Gcode which the solidoodle will run no problem. If you have a 2D part, you can export from solidworks, or cad program as .DXF and enter inkscape, and with the plug in, convert it to Gcode. 2 in 1 functionality is pretty slick.
I have a plastic enclosure around my unit, for safety purpose i would have to buy the stick on tinted laser shielding to prevent stray light/reflections from escaping.

For $550 you get a complete laser unit. to convert a 3d printer you are likely stuck with low power. You lose the 3d printer as a 3d printer . you need to add a bunch of stuff to make it into a proper laser machine.
I have dreamed about a laser engraver cutter for a long time. But for now I think I will stick to learing 3d printing. Would be easy to go off on a tangent. Maybe a laser cutter in a year or so . hmm.
