Topic: New Mac XYZware 1.2 (change in build number)

XYZPrinting released a new version of 1.2 (now you have to look at the build number to differentiate). The older one was 1.2-1C1371 and the new one is 1.2-1C1402

1C1402 installs firmware 1.2.6 on your machine but if you actually try and print anything the program crashes a few seconds into slicing with an exception error. Duh.

The release note mentions something about an extruder registration um, "toolkit", but there doesn't seem to be any sign or trace of such a function.

So, as per usual, avoid this, and of course any other XYZPrinting updates like the plague.

Ain't that the truth. I love the machine but everything else about this company blows dead donkey.

After much fooling around with various app’s for printing with the DaVinci 1.0, I learned the hard way - don’t upgrade from 1.2.3 (1C137) for a number of reasons (most notably their behind the scenes trickery).

The Nozzle upgrade app is located here (on the Mac):

  • Right click the XYZware app in your Applications folder (or wherever you put it), select “Show Package Contents”,
    Click the Contents folder,
    Click the Resources folder. 
    The Nozzle Toolkit app is there - scroll down to find it.

I recommend reading my previous post on how to get back to the previous version/firmware.

I just updated the Mac version to the new 1.2 release.

But it keeps saying that an upgrade is available every time it starts.

The Release nots says this version is to support reloaded cartridges. I notice that the new Cartridges supplied with the version 2 Printer now have a lock and a rewind capability. Has anyone tries this.

Also does anyone know how to update the firmware on the Mac version of the App. My Firmware is 1.0.B (1A11) the new app if you expand the package shows it has firmware F20_20140626_FW_2A19_V2.0.J_RELEASE.bin version in the resource files. Is this suitable for the Version 2.0A printer?

And how would I get it installed. The Update firmware button is always greyed out.

Any help appreciated.

A couple of points:

  • They embed several things in files that get placed in different locations (info in things like .plist...etc.) - don't mess with them unless you know what you're doing.

  • The greyed out Update button should restore after awhile but, first (assuming you're using a Mac), go to Applications>Utilities>ActivityMonitor:
    -- You should see an item there that's trying to connect to xyz's update site - click the Force Stop button - also, try it with the machine on and off.

  • I hope that helps...  I'm living with 1.2.3 (1C137) and it's firmware - I can run gcode created in Slic3r and have had no problems following my approach.
    I will say that, I may switch to Simplify3D software because I need to add supports in some areas but not in other and it looks like that software with enable this...  But, first I'm going to try hacking the open source code to accomplish it because $150 is far too much to swallow....

  • You can get previous version of the software (with firmware) from the disc that came with the machine.

  • Once you've got the version you want running, plan on NOT updating again unless you trust them (I don't) so, at that point, you'll have to make a choice - to update or, to not update.

  • If you don't want to update, you can stop the nagging update reminder by editing some files but, I won't suggest what and how - it should be obvious to programmers and, to non-programmers, don't mess with it. In that case, you can use an app like LittleSnitch to see what's being sent, and what app's are sending it - and stop it.  Otherwise, live with the reminder pop-up.
