Topic: SD4 X axis cooling fan problems (or is it Repetier Host? Or Slic3r?)

So I'm trying to print http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:38399 but I'm having a problem:

When I load the .stl file into Repetier Host it looks right, but when I tell it to slice (with settings that work on another model), it spends a couple of seconds and generates an essentially empty file.

I'm running Repetier Host V0.85b and Slic3r 0.9.9 on Win7x64, which is the stock configuration from the SD website.

I looked at upgrading one or both of them, but it's unclear how the configuration files specific to the SD4 are set up, and how I'd enter all the configuration parameters if they got lost in the upgrade.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks!

Thats same one I used and it works great. What if you slice wslic3r and export gcode and manually insert gcode into RH, or try slickmg w cura. As far as model goes it works fine because im using same one, sliced no problem

"All your base are belong to us." SD4 with a RUMBA, supernight PS, 40mm fan on X motor, lawsey carriages with new better tolerance rods, flanged rear bearings, new NEMA 17 with leadscrew on Z-Axis, and e3d v6 with MK5.

You're using an old version of slic3r. Update to 1.1.7 or 1.2.6 Printed correctly I feel like it is not a good fit, so try overextending a bit to make it snug.

Didnt even see he was using older version, deff upgrade. I used ABS and its snug, maybe because of shrinkage worst case some tape on motor to build out shim or do as Jago said (I would listen to him, theres a reason hes in my sig big_smile)

Re: SD4 X axis cooling fan problems (or is it Repetier Host? Or Slic3r?)

I could be wrong, I never actually measured the model. The first one I printed had a tendency to fly off at 175mm/s so I needed a tighter fit.

I think eventually I'll do away with that fan if I can find a more appropriate (more powerful) A tepper for the X axis. It simply shouldn't get as hot as it does. It's overdriven like crazy just to work (not that Solidoodle's poor stepper configuration is any secret).

I started with the same thingiverse object, but modified it to fit tighter on the motor:

Screw the fan on, and press the mount onto the stepper motor.  Works great.

Printed it in PLA, screwed a fan into it, stuck it on the stepper, wired it into the power connector for the defective vent fan, and I can touch the stepper without burning my fingers!

Nice!  Thanks for the hints on how to make it work (updating Slic3r was relatively easy, and didn't break anything).
