So I built my kit and started to heat it up for the first time. The controller was reading 22 degrees, but the end of the filastruder was smoking, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't happen at 22C, does anyone know what went wrong? Maybe the wiring isn't right, I was a little confused when trying to connect everything to the stall protector. The instructions don't specify which port the wires are supposed to go into exactly.
Nothing should be smoking....
How about a picture of how you connected things on the controller? How long did it take to start "smoking"? What specifically was "smoking"?
it only took a few minutes, I tried to take a picture, but you can't really tell what's connected to what. On the stall I had "in +" connected to the red wire from the fan and the middle bar of the 2nd switch. The "in -" is connected to the left port from the motor. The "out +" is connected to the right port from the motor. The "out -" is connected to port 10, one wire from the heater, and the negative from the power supply.
On the control ports 1,2,5,6,11,12 are empty. 3 and 4 are connected to the orange thermocouple - on 3, + on 4. 7 is connected to the other wire from the heater, 8 is connected to 9. 9 is also connected to the top of one switch, 10 is connected to everything I listed above.
The top of the two switches are connected and the middle of the 1st switch is connected to the + of the power supply.
I guess its possible that you got grease or something on the heater during assembly, and that was burning off. The other possibility is that the heater is bad, but I think that would be the first I've heard of a heater failing like that.
The insulation was burning and it only said 22C. It doesn't matter which port the wires go into on the stall protector? I switched them around so both the motor wires are "in -" and "out -", but I haven't tried turning it back on yet..
It is normal for the yellow insulation to brown on the first heatup. The insulation is rated to 450C, the heater cannot get over 250C even if you connected it directly to 12v.
Why do you think that the stall protector would have anything to do with what is happening at the nozzle? The proper way to wire the stall protection board is covered in the manual. The motor connects to both out terminals. The fact that you're ad-libbing here calls into question the rest of the assembly.
What you're saying doesn't really make sense. Are you sure you put the thermocouple in the nozzle? If a "few" minutes is 2-3, it isn't possible for the nozzle to even get to 100C in that time, much less start "smoking"...
So I just reread this:
The "in -" is connected to the left port from the motor. The "out +" is connected to the right port from the motor. The "out -" is connected to port 10, one wire from the heater, and the negative from the power supply.
That is wrong.
I thought it was obvious that the output of the stall protection board goes to the motor itself, but I guess not.
You never said what was smoking (i assumed the nozzle), but I'd guess the stall protection board from the way you describe things. Wire the stall protection board correctly, disconnect the heater, and power things up. Check if the motor rotates, and see if the temperature indicated responds to holding the thermocouple (temperature should increase) and touching it to a piece of ice (temperature should decrease).
I thought it might mean something because the manual doesn't state exactly which port to connect the wires to, it just says connect to the stall. I'm no electrical engineer, it was just the only thing I could think of.
I figured it out though. The instructions don't say that the wire coming off of the thermocouple needs to be connected to the nozzle to read the temp and I guess it was trying to over compensate to heat up my room lol.
I honestly thought the instructions were somewhat confusing, but then again I'm one of those people that need it explained to me like I'm 5. An assembly video would have been wonderful, maybe you should consider making one for those people like me lol.

I apologize for this, I've revised to clarify. The stall protection is a relatively new thing, and I've added now added verbiage in the step by step portion.

Insert thermocouple in brass plug.
