Topic: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

i've been using S3D for a couple weeks now and been getting some awesome prints at a fraction of the speed of XYZware the only problem is recently my infill is starting to look spotty with gaps in it i've tried slowing it down to 3000mm/min down from 4000mm/min with no luck i've also tried using XYZware with the same sort of result happening does anyone have any idea what might be causing this the outer layers seem to still look quite nice though.

any advice would be appreciated thanks.

edit: oops forgot to add the picture

Edit 11/02/15

well ive had some partial success in getting the fill to look nice but ive had to slow it all the way down to 1050mm/min (17.5mm/sec) even though before i was getting good prints at all the way up to 3000/4000mm/min

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

Picture(s) would help.  Also it sounds like you have an extrusion issue, not an S3D issue.

Did you change to a different roll of filament from the time the prints where good?

i did change filament but i changed back to the filament that was working good to see if i had received some bad quality stuff and the problem persisted

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

Well then a question. If the outer layers look good and the inner layers will never be seen except by you during printing does it really matter what they look like? As long as they are giving you the fill you need I really wouldn't worry what they look like since they will be buried inside the print.

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

yeah for projects where i don't really need much density it isn't a problem but when i print things that need to be a bit strong the fill being spotty like this doesn't help much in keeping the piece together

Well infill because it is usually printed faster requires a higher temp. The reason being is that the filament acts as a heat sink pulling heat from the head as it passes through. The faster it passes through the more heat it removes until it can no longer keep up with the feed rate and melt rate. So you need to raise the temp about 10 degrees from where it is now and see what happens.

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

3000 is still fast imo. I use 1400 to 2000 as speed. Am I too conservative ? Also, I would suggest to try a settings reset in S3D or maybe tune your infill speed parameter.
Good luck

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

3000 to 4000 is too fast for this machine with the weight of the carriage and the fact the machine will be moving so fast the linear rods end up flexing. But to help my infill i play with the overlap settings . Also you may need to up your extrusion multiplier for the faster speeds as it may not be able to keep up with the movements probably. I tried printing this fast but my prints looked like a dirty homeless mans beard. Haha

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

Hehe, just saw the picture in the OP. What is that color called, Pepto?

Seriously though, try slowing it down and upping the temp. Infill should be around 60mm/s at most. Since Simplify3d seems to like mm/m, not sure why. Just take 60mm/s x 60 seconds and you get 360mm/m. That is your onfill speed max.

In fact die to the weight of this head. 65mm/s is the highest speed you should use for any print move rather it's perimeters, infill, top and bottom goll and so on. This id not a fast machine. If you want speed then you will need to invest in a Rostock/Delta/Kossell machine.

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

oops, 60 * 60 = 3600 wink. It is still too fast imo. Btw you can change the scale in the options to use mm/s. I use 1400 to 2000/m. In S3D it is a base speed when printing then it adjust from choosen multiplier. I would be curious to try at 60mm/s. Maybe our values are so differents because of different logical on each software.
good luck

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

You can go into S3D settings and change the units to mm/s instead of mm/m

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

After looking at the pic your perimeters look good i would suggest bumping up your infill extrusion width a bit. I have been playing with this a bit with great success when using sparse infill every other layer with an extrusion width set at 200% in relation to the .4 nozzle dia.

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

Hi, from your photo it looks like you are printing at a low resolution (looks like .3 or .4). Because the default fill angles are -45/45, infill only overlaps every other layer. The thicker the layer the more space between infill will be.

I have had the same issue, albeit a lot worse with thinner prints. I upped my infill extrusion to about 125% to fix the issue.

You can also only infill at a single angle to have all the infill line up. I did this once and didn't like the results so i stay at the -45/45 angles.

Hopefully S3D will include more fill patterns soon as I miss the Honeycomb fill myself.

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

Yes i miss the honeycomb as well. Also the honeycomb makes translucent parts look cool.

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

hey guys thanks for all the advice got to say i've tried pretty much everything you guys have mentioned with no luck as of yet i'm going to fork out the ridiculous like 50$au for a XYZ filament cartridge in a last ditch attempt that maybe i've somehow been unlucky and all the filament that was working is somehow bad and if that doesnt work guess ill have to wait till the xyz store has nozzles for sale again

Is that true for printing moves only or also for travel moves?

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

You can have fast rapid speeds as that doesnt matter as its not extruding during fast retracts or rapids so i would say its too fast for when you are actually printing material.

Re: Simplify3d Infill is a mess

are you using a flashed cartridge?
I had a problem with a flashed cartridge where the extrusion rate was cut in half. I had to bump my extrusion multiplier to 2.0 to make up for it. then about 15 hours of print time later the extrusion rate was fine, and I had to put my multiplier back to 1.0

Not sure a flashed cart is causing that. To my knowledge the only thing on the carts serial eprom is the type of filament, temperatures for extruder and bed, the color, the serial, diameter, and the remaining amount.

All the other data and settings are handled by the slicer and host. Maybe the program is just acting up. Could be a bug XYZ added to prevent you from using simplify3d since they make no money on it.

I am coming to the opinion thst XYZ is greedy and cares about the initial sale and money from carts.
