Topic: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

Ok so now the veteran has has a question. I have printed for many years as you all know by now. I have yet to see this issue however and not for the life of me pin it down. i want to say over extrusion but then all the layers above look great. I am printing at a .3 layer height my temps are 100 and 230, i have tried various temps with very little if any change. My e-steps are perfect and my extrusion width is otherwise perfect on test runs. As I said I am not new to printing and have seen most issue and know how to fix them. But this is a new one for me and I am not sure where to start. Any input would be appreciated. This happens to more than one model and seems to be worse on larger prints. Does not matter if glue is used or not either.

The only think I can think of it's that maybe the first meters of filament are getting humidity or being affected by heat/cold ?

That's really weird stuff...

Does your nozzle scratch into the abs when it deposits the filament on bottom layers ? Maybe a speed/extrusion ratio for your 1st couple layers ?

Re: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

Have you inspected your Z screw & wellnut?  Maybe it is gummed up near the top preventing it from moving the full 0.3mm?

Re: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

I looked at that finished print this morning after it ran over night. The anomaly does not go all the way around it so that rules out a Z axis issue. I think it may be a bed leveling issue. I am going to level the bed with a feeler gauge and try it again. I thought it was level at the time, but maybe not. Or the glass is warping after a longer time then what I use to make my level adjustments.

bed leveling would make sens. Thats why I asked if your nozzle scratch on the deposited filament on the first layers. Since I use the paper method, my nozzle scratch a bit on the first and last layer but no biggie.

I've been messing about with PLA on the Davinci the past couple of days.
I was having a problem with the nozzle digging into the first layer and fixed it by dropping the extruder temp.
Although Carl did say he's already tried various temps so this might not be the same issue ??

I see the same thing when i switched over to black filament and was wondering if it was linked to the color. Here is a sample of the xyz filament white vs black on the same clip piece. I am not 100% sure if i was using the blue painters tape or glass when i printed them. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/stoj8yJ3bR8xRiflD65RhywBcPTmi-SVs5sJ8yYFnP_VMTx9C0SnadIDnxydRd1jFs9dK9VVWY8=w1838-h706

We need to replace filament with good reliable sources and see the difference.

Come to think of it, I had a similar issue with the dial gauge holder on Thingiverse and it was black ABS I used for that !
Is the black absorbing more heat on some prints perhaps ??

Re: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

Maybe its a quality issue and i got some blue shaxon filament  from fry's that I will be able to compare when i get through my xyz black.

One other thing is I forgot, t I run stls through the modelrepair netfab site all the time, but I don't keep track. Maybe I did the white or black clip and not the other.

I have used Shaxon natural and love the way it prints. I think Shaxon for the price of 24 bucks is a good deal and prints well.

I was going to order some of that Shaxon natural but the negative reviews on Amazon were so many I decided not. lol
With that being said I got some Hatchbox yellow and it is the best I have printed with for fine detail.
I can't believe color make such a difference.

Re: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

I have had this exact issue. The only way I could fix it was by reducing the first layer "squish". Of course with glue stick when I backed off the squish I was not getting great adhesion and my prints would often peel off the bed ever so slightly. I switched for ABS slurry + Kapton for this reason.

Re: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

I have had this issue multiple times as well. To me the fix is lower temps (especially bed temp) and better leveling. On your pic you can notice the 'elephant foot' effect in the corners, meaning that your first layers are too squished. You should be able to print ABS with the bed at 90º without adherence issues. If not then use kapton tape, or ABS slurry or similar. You can also try with a extrusion cooling fan, which will likely help, but it might increase warping (which you could fight with a brim).

Re: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

I second that yellow hatchbox, it prints superior to anything else I have printed with so far.

Re: What is up with my first few layers on this machine?

I just switched to a Hatchbox white and am having the same exact issue.  I'm new to all this and thought it was because I just replaced the firmware and am still tinkering with the settings.

Also my extruder seems like its "scratching" the surface of layers as it gets taller, but I also just did a print of a 2" diam by 5" tall cylinder at 10% fill and it came out great.

I have also use Hatchbox White in the past. I personally don't like it because it burns easily. I can only set my extruder up to 205 before I get charring on corners/overhangs.

If I set the bed above 90, the bottom of the print actually starts to melt into a blob. and also darkens to a brownish tint.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally buy PLA?
