Topic: First layer is rough

Hello,

I have been having some issues with my printer and the first layer. I found that the first layer of prints is pretty rough when the fill is done.

I have tried to lower the extrusion multiplier, but this results in the top layer not filling in completely.

I use Simplify 3D, and I have also tried to add a z-offset (0.05mm) and this has helped a bit, but if I increase it more than this, then the first layer doesn't get good adhesion on the bed (I use Elmer's purple glue sticks. I just got a roll of kapton in and will try this soon)

I was thinking it may be a temp setting, as I currently have the hot end set to 205 for my White ABS (More than this and I tend to get scorching, but this may only be due to the rough first layers resulting in the nozzle getting gummed up with excess ABS. (I was running at upwards of 220 but the first layer was still rough.)


Has anyone had this issue, and does anyone know the best way to avoid this? Tried to decrease the width of the first layer fill, but wasn't sure if this was proper.

What infill speed are you using? Also if it is the first layer, does it matter as long as the top layer is good? Or is it bad as well?

My concern with withe rough bottom layer is that it tends to cause build up on the nozzle which then gets deposited somewhere on the price printing... usually charred

Understandable, so again what is your infill speed, layer height and temperature.

Fill speed: 720 mm/min (1800 mm/min defualt:: 80% Infill :: 50% First layer)
Layer Height 0.2 (0.3 first layer)
Temperature: Currently 205 C (Had it at 220, 215, & 210 before but kept lowering it as the filament was charring [Hatchbox White ABS from Amazon])
Bed Temp : 90 C

I have also reduced first layer width to 94% and may try it even smaller. It looks like the rough first layer fill is due to the first layer being too wide. When infilling, , the excess plastic has no where to go but up, causing a rough first layer. 2nd layer smooths it a bit, but also results in some build up on the nozzle that I would like to avoid.

Have you calibrated your bed level to .15mm from the nozzle? You could have your bed too close to the nozzle and this will cause your first layer to to bunch the lines up. Also make sure your nozzle size is set to .40 and your actual filament size is measured and entered correctly. Most filament is not 1.75mm but in fact more like 1.672 and that is important for feed control.

I would also go back to the 1800 mm/m as most software is in mm/s and the average for infill at both .2 and .3 is around 30mm/s. You could be going too slow as well.
