Incorperating PLA into Real Products

Hello,
I really want to incorporate biodegradable plastics into the products I design for work.  AND, since I have a Solidoodle, it makes a lot of sense for me to use PLA.

What kind of properties does PLA have, when 3D printed (I've been using ABS)?  Is PLA as tough and durable as ABS?  The only advantage I can see in using PLA is that it is readily available in clear.  Aside from that, and the fact that it is biodegradable, do you people find that PLA is a better material than ABS in some ways??

I'm basically just trying to look for a reason to incorporate it into more of the medical devices that I design.

FYI PLA is apparently fully UV weldable...  And I assume fully moldable, because it is extrudeable in our 3D printers.  It seems to be popping up more and more...
