Topic: New XYZ Refills???

I was looking at the US XYZ site today and they have new refill kit for ABS.
Anyone seen this before?  It looks like the refills are 1kg??? and come with a chip.  The cartridges are redesigned too.  I just got my davinci a few weeks ago and have kept it stock for now.  Also looking at their site it says their PLA will only work with the AIO.  I bought mine because XYZ said PLA would be coming, now I am pissed.

Re: New XYZ Refills???

The rumor is that existing stock 1.0/1.0A and 2.0 machines will be able to print PLA if you order a replacement extruder ($100 for the 1.0/1.0A and $160 for the 2.0).
The refill kits are only 600 grams, just like the full cartridges.
Also, Amazon and Studica list refill kits at $31 (you may pre-order... actual stock is not yet available) which represents an almost 10% price increase for XYZ's base price for filament. I would presume that a new full cartridge will be significantly more than the $31 for just a refill too. I suspect that will be a nasty surprise for folks who have been keen to stay completely stock even down to using XYZ filament. However it does underscore that if/when XYZ manages to effectively block anyone from using non XYZ filament on their machine then you are really going to be at the mercy of XYZ's desire to profit from filament sales. It's not as if there's anything stopping them from doubling or even tripling their filament price... except that at some price point people will happily ditch their machines rather than pay for proprietary filaments.
I guess their market research indicates that at this time consumers are willing to pay more than they have been paying for filament.
XYZ... the company that just keeps on giving. smile

Re: New XYZ Refills???

I only have my Da Vinci Just over a week and my refill on the stats is down to 15m, it is still nearly full, but I have been using other colours off standard reels.

The xyz refills are just too expensive,  I know form a sales point of view it is clever to make a system that will generate repeat business, but a Da Vinci refill is £34 in UK for 600g, I can buy a 500g ABS Esun reel from HobbyKingUK for £5.61 !!!

Using the same settings (as the stock cartridge is left in place) I also get better quality prints with the Esun ABS, so why when I can get six 500g reels for the price of one refill would I buy from XYZ.

As I still have to make my reset tool, I may be forced to buy one more refill, but if they priced it right e.g. £19.95 then most would probably buy from them to save any hassle, but at that price it is just too much.

Their market is really schools, offices and people who just about can turn the thing on, not guys like us.  So we have no choice but to mod them.

Re: New XYZ Refills???

It's probably time for me to get serious about modding I guess.  I wasn't too concerned about refill price but it looks like they are going to get nasty.  I'm not real confident in my ability to do the hacks myself but I guess I may have to give it a shot and hope for the best.

You can thank them in 5-10 years, when we all have fantastic quality 3D printers for <$500, because they managed to make a consumer product of it that some little old lady that teaches 5th grade science can figure out how to use.

Arguing that tinkerers have access to raw materials cheaper than productized items is both foolish and obvious.  It's true of pretty much everything... your shoes are $2 worth of materials yet you probably paid $50 - your car is $500 worth of materials yet you probably paid $25000 - your Davinci 3D printer itself is probably $50 worth of materials, and yet you paid $400 - the list goes on and on.

Just stop whining (nobody cares anyways) and buy (or design) a filament resetter, if you're so "in the know".

Re: New XYZ Refills???

I'm hoping that mixing say shreaded milk bottle hdpe with pellets or abs or whatever works,
once I have my mini shreader and the filastruder up and working we can get cheap stuff.

I reuse my nespresso coffee capsules so I am a tight one (fill and foil wrap ends simple).
XYZP are not too much off the going filament rate but it would be fantastic to see
shreaded milk bottles/ pet soda bottles going into filament.

Consider with XYZ you get 600G for 27 bucks on average. While Other better quality brands you 1Kg for 35 bucks. I think the other brands are a better deal when you weigh in quality as well. So far of the 3 carts I have tried being Yellow, Natural, and Black on the Natural gave me results I could just tolerate. While Shaxom Natural at 27 bucks for 1Kg at Fry's gave me stellar results at the same settings.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
