Topic: Da vinci 1.0a - should I use simplify 3d from day 1?

Hello everyone,
I started reading the forum a while ago, and decided to buy a da vinci 1.0a just a few days ago!

I'm still waiting for the printer to be delivered, probably next week, in the mean while I'm trying to understand the most I can about software firmware etc.

My plan is to use 3rd party filaments, so I will build myself an arduino cartridge resetter, I have no problems playing with arduino, so making it won't be hard at all.

I understand XYZware tries to silently update the printer firmware so it can detect an hacked cartridge EEPROM, so I was wondering if I would benefit from buying Simplify3D and just starting using it from the very first day without even installing XYZware on my mac.

Honestly being tied to OEM materials would be very bad to me, they are quite expensive and not easy to find in my country, I haven't found them for less than 55dollars per 600g plus shipping! While I could buy other brands filament for as little as 9 dollars per 500g

Another question, just out of my curiosity... I read the cartridge EEPROM contains information regarding the extruder and bed temperature, but I also saw you can set those temperatures in Simplify3D. Do Simplify3D settings override the cartridge default ones?

Simplify3D is the way to go.

Although using xyxware as long as its firewall blocked to get a feel for the machine is what I did at first.

The printer will use the cartridge temps to preheat the bed and extruder and after that the temp
setting in S3D will take over.

I find this works very well even using PLA filament, first layer is a bit hotter.

I didn't know that. I was wondering why the prints would start at 90C no matter what I set it to in S3D.

Does simplify3d directly control the printer via usb, or does it load the gcode on the SD card? I'm wondering if I can unplug the computer after I send the print command.

It works just the XYZware.

As long as you are on stock firmware. If you have switched to Repetier Firmware then it prints live over USB and you will stop the print if you unplug the USB.  But you can just copy the composition.gcode file to your memeory card and then print from the LCD on the printer and tell it to use that file.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

I've just ordered my Da Vinci 1.0 few days ago and should received it tomorrow.

Considering I just got it (from Newegg) I think it will be version 1.0A, meaning would not be able to flash the firmware yet. Will have to wait until there is some development for this board version.

Reading a bunch of posts on this and other forums seems that my best option is getting Simplify3D for working with stock firmware on 1.0A and being able to do the cartridge hack for using third party filament.

Verison .92A is supposed to be for the 1.0A as well. You just have to change the machine type before you compile and upload.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

I'm new to 3D printing but familiar with software/hardware. So I somewhat feel comfortable with flashing and modding.

Ignoring the cost of Simplify3D, would you choose "Version .92A " over "Simplify3d" ?

Are there reasons why might want to flash if had a copy of simplify3D?

If you don't mind spending $150 on S3D then that would be the better way to go, as you will get for the most part similar results. Repetier firmware will give you access to internal settings like esteps and stuff like that to better fine tune the printer but it is not necessary.

For me it is a cost issue. I bought my 1.0 on ebay from that guy that was selling returns in various conditions before XYZ stopped him. I bought mine for $250 with what was said to be a jammed extruder. Fired it up and it worked out of the box. So I can't rationalize $150 software on a $250 printer. I am actually going to swap out the main-board so I can use any open source firmware and Host.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
