Topic: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Hi, I'm having an issue where my print of 90x30x1mm print ends up off center (and over the edge of the build platform).

What causes this issue? Is this a known bug? Is there a trick or workaround to center in the gcode or something?

I can easily replicated it time and time again, I think it happens to 20% of the stuff I try to print.

I've attached screenshots of skeinforge and pronterface.

*Edit: I already have a corrected build dimension: 150x150x150-75-75+0 and if I press print it really does go over the build platform edge.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Pronterface and Skeinforge are correct, the problem is the STL.  The lower left corner of the model is placed at 0,0 which is the middle of the platform.  0,0 needs to be at the center of the model to get the model centered on the platform.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Somewhere in the process that I'm using (converting a bitmap to STL) that error creeps in.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Ian, what do you find to be the best way to centre these models?

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

I usually use replicator-G to center my prints. I open the stl file then use the move options to center. Then I save the file and replace the existing stl.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

I usually use the compose button to place the item on the build platform wherever I want it. Note that (at least for my set up) that there are 4x4 boxes, each representing 50mm which makes the visible area too large. The leftmost square on the bottom should line up with the corner of your build platform.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Do any of you guys actually use Replicator-G to print? I'm downloading it now through tethered phone internet...

Just having something that will let me print on the bed and without crashing the extruder into the corner of the printer is worth the wait though haha.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

You can always just use repetier/slicer. It has the ability to center prints

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Repetier won't print atall for me (It will move on X and Y but when it gets to where it's going to start printing, it doesn't extrude nor do the manual controlls work until I close and then reopen the program).

But I suppose I could use Slic3r with Pronterface.

PS. I also tried to plate things in Slic3r in an effort to center them... looked fine and centred on the plate... exported to .STL and still tried to print off bed in Pronterface/Skeinforge.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Centred the model in Rep-G... saved... sliced with Skeinforge... STILL tries to print off plate sad

Any particular thing I should be doing? Is centring on the plate in Rep-G not the same as changing the centre of the STL itself?

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Do you have the latest solidoodle release of software?  I'm guessing your settings aren't right because of old software.  You can download repetier settings from solidoodle.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Yeah I downloaded the Solidoodle repetier settings and everything... set it up to the letter... maybe something I changed afterwards in print settings is screwing it up but anyway... just want to get pronterface/skeinforge working for now because it's worked pretty well for me so far, just not for the parts I want to print at the moment.

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Was just looking at settings in Pronterface... could the "offset of origin" fields in the "build_dimensions" setting be used to reset where home is?

I'm probably way off but fihured I'd ask tongue

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

No I think your right on. I only used skeinforge and pronterface a couple times but I think you are looking in the right direction.  I think it should be something along the lines of -75,-75,0. Ill try firing up pronterface in a bit and get back to you what my settings are

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

Let me know how it goes... I've gotta go to work.

5hrs+ with the printer on today and nothing accomplished sad

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

My build dimensions are set as 150, 150, 150,-75,-75, 0

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

And does that seem to centre most prints?

I've been trying to print out the tensioner arm for the mk2 extruder: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:34936
but it keeps screwing up. Have you printed this?

When you slice things (using these settings) do they still show at the bottom left corner of the preview screen in Pronterface, but then print from near the centre?

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

HOLY SHENANIGANS IT FLOCKING WORKS!!! big_smile

Haven't printed yet but it shows in preview as roughly in the middle of the plate smile

I had mine in as 159x150x150-75-75+0 so I guess it was just a syntax error on my part... changed it to your syntax and it's all good.

Always the smallest things that are easiest to overlook. Thank you!! ^_____^

Re: Pronterface Centers prints incorrectly?

I had a feeling that was the culprit.  Glad your working now.  Enjoy the great times ahead.
