Topic: High-resolution Layers

I was thinking about printing resolution; 3dHubs considers Medium to be 100-250 microns, High to be 25-100 microns, and Ultra to be less than 25 microns.

I usually do ordinary printing at .3mm resolution, and quality printing at .1mm resolution.  I've never tried to print with a layer thinner than .1mm.  Today, I printed a 25mm calibration cube at .05mm resolution.

WOW!

At 1/20th of a mm layer height, the walls were smooth and consistent. After 6mm of printing, I adjusted the extruder temp by 5 degrees to eliminate some roughness on the corners.  I'm frankly amazed the Z-axis hardware was capable of such small dimensions.

Obviously the print time goes up considerably.

How things such as bridging, support, warping, etc., behave at this layer height...I don't know yet.  I am going to see if I can leverage such layer resolution into greater details or accuracy on my armor models, figures, or mechanical items.  I may be simply picking fly crap out of pepper.

Any thoughts?

Re: High-resolution Layers

sounds great! and Im sure most this type printer are capable of being tweaked to this point. mainly just need a great designed file error free to start from, and thats 90% of the issue with 3d file repository sites. not many good designers uploading to them. most good designers make a living that way so why give their work away? its understandable. we just have to find a way to overcome the obstacles of getting a good quality stl file to start with then fine tune our printers and work together in these efforts.

as for 3Dhubs info... well I dont consider 3dhubs much authority on the surveys so... I just got the "personalized customized flyers" for their student discount program from 2 months ago yesterday, nothing personalized at all. plus they say 10% off instead of the 15% off that the PDF flyers say which I got 2 months ago. plus they are not flyers but calling card post card sized card stock double sided with little text at all and they came from Brooklyn NY not Amsterdam so 2 months shipping? yeah right. also all topics, posts etc we made on the 3dhubs 'st louis talk' page there have been purged yet again so I give up on their ability to manage a marketing site as they have no communication nor marketing abilities. "mayors needed"? no. site management needed. I get more 3d printing jobs by local word of mouth than any of the sites that add fees to the customers. seems 3dhubs mostly promotes the powder style industrial laser 3D printers like Shapeways use and a few other high priced printers in huge cities mostly near their home base. when you look at how they calculate job prices and who gets the most 'real' jobs. I mean I am in the St Louis hub city area with 13 hubs listed, some with multiple printers and I am a top quantity hub here with a whopping 2 jobs in the year that I have been on 3Dhubs. LOL reminds me of way back getting certificates from Mason shoes for being "1st place salesman for selling 0 pairs of shoes for the year" 3 years in a row LMAO.  heck we use Solidoodle 3D printers and get these results, yet they dont even list them in the top 20 on there site. so why should we promote 3Dhubs? the 3 jobs I did counting their own test print I rated an average of 4.5 of 5 in print quality and that was when I listed my SD2 as ultra b4 they changed that scale to type/make/model printer with preset ratings.

so stats and $5 will buy ya a cup of coffee at most cafes ;^P

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs
