Topic: Solidoodle press filament spool sources
Has anyone found a source of material that arrives on a solidoodle press compatible spool. I want to order closer to the west coast than Brooklyn.

I am curious about this as well, especially since the Solidoodle filament is pricey!
I have read some reports of cardboard reels fitting with little modification.
BONUS INFO: If you buy the SainSmart ABS, the filament comes on a heavy cardboard reel with plastic inserts in the middle. If you remove the plastic inserts (carefully) and then reglue- I used hot glue- the round sides in place, the reel just barely fits over the Press' filament feed nozzle thing in the hinged top.
Cardboard reels are too janky......I want my printer sleek and sexy.....I just wish there was a formfactor......I wonder if the makerbot stuff will fit. The new ones are smaller because they went with an internal spool too on the 4g
couldnt you do something like this:
... I cant add links... Look back a page, it is called Removal of spool holder/tray. A guy passes the line through the back completely negating the need for the solidoodle spools in the first place. YMMV though

I'm curious as well as Solidoodle told me they aren't shipping filament spools yet.
That sure makes a lot of sense.....

I placed an order for a spool of black when I ordered my printer back in October.
This is what I was told when I asked about shipment:
Hi Christopher:
Thank you for reaching out to us. We have not begun to shipping out Press filaments yet. We are hoping to begin shipping out Press filaments as soon as possible. You will receive an email confirmation with tracking once it has shipped.
Best,
Daniel
Interesting

Just out of curiosity, what are the dimensions of the Press filament spools?
I got one around Christmas time as well, in red. It look a little bit different than the spool that came with the Press though.
They are about 8 7/8" in diameter, 2 1/8" in width, and the center hole is about 2" in diameter.
Yesterday I tried a roll of Micro Center's ABS filament ("Toner Plastics" brand) on my Press and it fits perfectly, other than that it's too tall to allow the top lid to close. So far it's printing really well, too! It comes in several colors and is unbelievably cheap (~$16 for 1kg). I'm not allowed to post links yet, but it's easy to find by going to microcenter.com and searching for "toner abs"
They ship, if you're not near one of their stores.
In your opinion, what are the best material (grades) to print 3 D. We tested the printer Delta in the 3D Universal, where we used ABS plastic and it worked out great. What do you think about the material such as "Krasten" ???
I found one:
i cant add links but thing:644713 on thingiverse

The Toner plastics white seems to work quite well for me. The yellow doesn't stick as well in my printer.
Seems like it wouldn't take much to mod the Press hinges and lid for just a little more clearance to more gracefully accomodate Toner Plastic's 1kg reels.

I've been using the Toner Plastics black with pretty good results. I just said screw it and made a PVC spool holder that sits behind the printer. Has anyone use the Inland stuff at Microcenter? I bought a spool of that to try out but haven't opened it yet.
I had the thumping issue with the sample solidoodle abs filament (grinding into the filament) as well, so I ordered a spool of MicroCenter Toner Plastics ABS Natural filament to try. So far it seems to help with the thumping issue, but I haven't had time to do a long print with it yet. I did notice that the Toner Plastic filament seems to come out thinner as compared to the sample filament. Just wondering for those who use the Toner Plastic filament if you had to change any settings like temperature or extrusion multiplier. Thanks!
In Slic3r, I have it set at 235C for the hot end, 104C for the bed, filament measured about 1.77mm and the multipler at 0.92. This seems to work well but ymmv.

I have a spool of Inland Black ABS in my printer at the moment. It doesn't sit all the way down in the holder on the Press, and the top and front panel can't close all the way. But it seems to print pretty well (better than the Solidoodle White ABS that the printer came with, IMHO).
My best prints have been with the Up! filament. Just be aware that you need to set the temperature to at least 255 to get reasonable results. It may be ABS, but it melts at a much higher temperature.
You can also make the Up spools fit in the press by cutting the ribs from one side of the centre support.
